Carl Williams Obituary

Carl Hitchcock WILLIAMS Born January 13, 1950. A native of Seattle, and resident of Bainbridge Island, Carl passed peacefully in the company of friends in Quito, Ecuador, on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Carl touched the lives of countless people, in a dizzying array of roles; as father, husband, big brother, teacher, friend, advisor, teammate, music maven, and kind stranger. A proud alumni of UW, Carl was often seen in purple and gold. He received his Master's in Education at Antioch University and taught at Roxhill Elementary for the past twelve years. He will be remembered as generous, fun loving, and warm spirited; a music enthusiast, an avid athlete, a great cook, and a reliable soul. Avid explorers, Carl and his wife Lydia spent the past two years living in Quito, Ecuador, where Carl taught third graders at the Colegio Americano. Much of their spare time was spent discovering the world, and exposing themselves to new cultures, most recently South America and the Caribbean. The son of Vernon and Mary Williams and the late Malvina Williams, Carl is survived by Lydia Williams, his wife and companion of thirty-eight years, his beloved daughters Lauren (and Johnny) Evison, and Heidi (and Brendan) McGill. Carl is also survived by his sister, Francie Ringold of Seattle, and his brother Scott Williams of Greenwich, Connecticut, nine nieces and nephews and by his forthcoming grandson, Owen Carl Hitchcock Evison. Services will be held Friday, July 3, 2:00 p.m. at The Karin Sherer Williams Memorial at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island. Donations in Carl's memory may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center. 400 Washington Avenue, PO Box 5632, Montgomery, AL 36177-7459.

I apologize for how late my condolences are. I just heard about Carl's passing. I taught with Carl for three years at Roxhill. He made our years there so much fun. He was wonderful with all of the students. As a teacher he touched many lives, both student and staff. He will be very missed.

I worked with Carl his first few years at Roxhill. I hadn't seen him in years but always asked about him when I ran into other Roxhill teachers and kept hoping I'd run into him. He was a great teacher with an incredible calmness. When I think of Carl, I see his smile and hear his laugh. I also think of how much his family meant to him. My thoughts are with you all.

I met Carl 20 years ago when I first moved to Seattle. I remember how taken I was by his gentleness as a father. We were on Bainbridge with the whole extended family and Carl was outdoors helping one of his young daughters and he was so present with her, so tender and playful. I was struck by this beautiful man's tender soul. My prayers and love go to all of you as you struggle to move into and through this loss. I am sure Carl is very, very near....love and prayers, Ellen Boyle

Carl will be sorely missed by all who were touched by his wonderful spirit, sense of humor and kindness. In the short time they were in Quito, he and Lydia made many friends and truly became a part of our family. Our deepest sympathy go to his family at this time.

We had not seen Carl for several years though often thought about how we admired him for pursuing his passion of teaching. I will always remember Carl in his bow ties & red/blue plaid slacks that he wore often when we worked together at Seattle Trust in the late 70's. He was dating Lydia then; the love of his life. He was very special and will never be forgotten. We send our sincere condolences to Lydia, his girls and entire family.
