Eugene Smith Hunt

Eugene Smith HUNT, D.O. April 7, 1919 - June 21,2004 He was born in , April 7, 1919, in Dayton, WA and died suddenly of a heart attack on June 21, 2004, at the age of 85. He was the youngest of four children and lived on multiple ranches and farms before his family settled in Ellensburg where he attended high school and had his sights set on becoming a concert violinist. He attended Central Washington State College and learned to fly light planes in a government sponsored program before WWII. He became interested in medicine as his mother had graduated from medical school in 1910. A close family friend, Roberta Wimer-Ford, D.O. recommended he attend the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Northeast Missouri. He graduated in 1944, married Catherine M. Green, a recent graduate of the Northeast Missouri State College. He and Catherine's honeymoon consisted of driving out to Seattle with just barely enough gas rations to get there. He served his internship at Waldo Hospital in north Seattle. He worked briefly at a group practice in Seattle. One of his patients convinced him they needed a doctor in the Riverton Heights area, so in 1946 he set up a solo practice on Pacific Highway South. He was one of the founding members of Standring Memorial Hospital that later became Shorewood Osteopathic Hospital. He was in General Practice for 50 years. He loved delivering babies, making house calls and seeing patients in the office. He was involved for all of his professional life in the Washington State Osteopathic Association and in 2003 received the Warren Lawless Lifetime Achievement Award. He was tireless in helping to assure that Osteopathic Physicians maintained full practice rights in the State of Washington. He was active at Seattle First United Methodist Church and was deeply committed along with his wife Catherine, in raising their five children. He and Catherine loved attending concerts, plays, and traveling throughout the United States. He is preceded in death by his eldest son David Eugene Hunt. He is survived by his wife Catherine Marie Hunt of Des Moines, WA, and four children, son Stephen Paul Hunt, of Auburn, WA, daughter Susan Marie Hislop of Kent, WA, son Mark Edward Hunt of Kent, WA, daughter Ann Louise Hunt of White Plains, N.Y., and 13 grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Wesley Terrace, 816 S. 216th in the auditorium on July 1 at 7:00 p.m. (206) 824-5000.
