Michael Martin "Mickey" Vergillo

Michael Vergillo Obituary

Michael "Mickey" Martin VERGILLO Lifelong Seattle resident. Born at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital on August 20, 1941 to Martin Vergillo and Elizabeth Mellor. Mickey fought a courageous battle with melanoma. He passed away December 11, 2010 at his home in Bellevue surrounded by family and friends. Mickey attended Bryn Mawr Elementary and Renton High School Class of 1959. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sandie Butler. Mickey and Sandie married in 1962 and began a journey that lasted 48 years. From a young age, Mickey thrived in challenging and competitive situations. This led to his instant success in the sport of cycling. At the age of 14, he won four First place trophies as a member of the Rainier Wheelman. He later became president of the Wheelman, and enjoyed many years of local and National championships including the Olympic Trials in 1964. He was Chairman of the Washington State Bicycling Association which had an integral role in the development of the Redmond Velodrome in 1975. He was also a 2-year letterman for the University of Washington men's gymnastics team, and the only UW athlete at the time to win Most Inspirational 2 years in a row. He graduated in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration. While attending the University he began selling cars from his father's gas station. This quickly transformed into a lifelong entrepreneurial passion with cars. He founded The Village Square Motor Car Co. in 1969. Many successful endeavors followed, including Xtra Car Rentals, Ryder Truck Rentals, and his current company, Extra Car Airport Parking. While serving as the Ryder Truck Rental National Dealer Association President, he developed the largest Ryder Truck Dealership in the NW. Aside from his love for cars, Mickey was an avid reader, who loved history, architecture and traveling to experience the world's food and wine. In 1977 Mickey and Sandie built their custom home in Bellevue. In 2000, he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending the Tour de France. Throughout his life, his adoration for Frank Sinatra was a source of both consolation and celebration. With dads passing, listening to Frank has been of great comfort to his family. We hope that when you hear Sinatra's voice it will inspire a memory of Mickey. Mickey is survived by his adoring wife Sandie Vergillo. Other survivors include his mother, Elizabeth "Tish" Vergillo, brother Tim Vergillo his wife Kay, son Michael M. Vergillo II his wife Kimberly and their children Lizzie, Zachary & Kirstie, son Anthony Vergillo his wife Amy and their son Arlo, daughter Angeli and her husband Anthony and their sons Frankie and Andre, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Marty Vergillo. Although mom has lost her loving husband and best friend, we will all cherish the memories. We are saddened by the loss of a great man.

When we leave this earth we are judged in part what we leave behind. Mickey left behind wonderful loving children and grandchildren. That is his legacy, and for that the world will be better place for a long, long time.

I know I will see you again Mickey and when we do, teach me to race and how to do back flips as we listen to old blue eyes.

It is my belief that when we are born we all start our lives like a blank canvas.Throughout our lives the person we have become and the relationships we have with the people around us color that canvas with the brush strokes of life.

And, when we reflect back on a person's life the image we see is like a portrait.Since Mickey's passing we are all reflecting on the portrait of Mickey Vergillo's life.

Our vision of Mickey varies because we have known Mickey through many circumstances and at different stages in his life .... and, in our lives.

Did you meet Mickey when you were a child, an adolescent, an adult or a senior citizen?
Are you a member of Mickey's family?
Were you a neighbor in Lakeridge, Bryn Mawr or Somerset?
Where you a classmate in grade school, high school or college?
Was he a gymnastic or cycling teammate or competitor?
Was he a business associate?
Or, was he just a friend you met along the way?

Over the months, years or decades that you knew Mickey your relationship with him generated a portrait of his life in your mind's eye. The Mickey Vergillo canvas was no longer blank to you.

When I look at Mickey's portrait I see the older brother I always wished I had.I see a charismatic leader, a loyal friend and a very passionate person.

My personal portrait of Mickey began in 1963 when I met him through competitive cycling.Over the remaining 47 years, Mickey has guided me through all facets of my life.

During those nearly five decades I called upon Mickey to seek his advice and support time after time.

Together, Mickey and I have endured the ultimate pain of losing loved ones.
But, we have also celebrated the love and support of our spouses and the incredible joy of our children and grandchildren.

We have also been blessed that the Ballew and Vegillo family peeking over his shoulder.I see his beloved Sandie next to him holding his hand, whispering in his ear and telling him how much she loves him.

I see that little twinkle in Mickey's eye and a smile on his lips.

I will never, ever get over Mickey's passing.

But, I will always have a warm glow in my heart when I reflect on my portrait of our lives together. To me, I see a beautiful portrait. A real masterpiece.

In those brush strokes I see my best friend, I see us always standing together through thick and thin, I see us laughing and crying together and I see friends who loved each other unconditionally.

I see my "brother from another mother."

Arrivederci, Il mio amico.

Until we meet again, my friend.

Sandie-
Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Sandy so wanted to make it to Mickey's funeral, but "Mother Nature" had a different plan. We are so grateful for the love and kindness Mickey and you have shown our daughter, Kimberly, as well as Zachary and Kirstie, (yours and our our g'kids) over the many years.
May you find comfort in the wonderful memories you and Mickey created over the past 48+ years. Know that he is now at peace.

My wife and I just got back from Arizona and by chance I read a 2 day old news paper and Mickey's picture caught my eye. I am in total shock. I feel so sorry for Sandie and the rest of his family. Mickey and I go back to about 1953, I was the one who introduced him to Sandie. We were in gymnastics together and biked to the U of W together and dated together we even participated in the midnight auto suppy business together when he had his bright orange 1950 "Chev". He supported me in all my trials and tribulations and I have nothing but the highest respect and admirration for him. Eventhough I was bigger and older I looked upon him as my older brother. I just can't imagine going through the rest of my life without seeing him now and then. We celibrated the life and the passing of Gary Smith, with Gary, together and laughed about our own heart problems. We were at the U of W together and didn't know it. Mickey was so very special to me beyond words. If anyone was to ask me what I want to be in life my answer would be "just like Mickey Vergillo" The class of "59" lost a very special member!I lost a very special friend!

I am so sorry for your loss. I was talking with a friend the other day. A Tony Bennett Christmas song came on the radio and I said that I wasn’t overly fond of Tony Bennett. I shared with her that your family always preferred Frank Sinatra. I think you said Anthony’s family preferred Tony Bennett. I only met your dad once, but he seemed a lovely man. I will definitely think of him when I hear Frank. Love, Erin

Mickey was just a few years younger than LB. We were good friends. training buddies, competitiors in bike racing and fellow officers in the first bike club in the NW, Rainier Wheelmen in his racing days. Always an exceedingly healthy guy. Although we did not stay in touch, I remember Mickey with the greatest fondness and sense of loss. And to think.....melanoma in one so healthy. Wow, numbing.
Great sense of humor, never saw him down. It is great to see him on his classic custom-made Cinelli in the picture gallery. He and I both had custom Cinelli road and track bikes (he first and I copied him). When I married a cycling Lady of about Mick's size, I tried to buy his Cinelli road bike off of him: no way, Jose!! was he going to part with that beauty. Always a Man of impeccable taste and super businessman.
His Dad's gas station in Lake City was a constant stop for those of us in the north end. He was working his way through school. One indelible memory I have is the metal trough that his Dad built to drain the absolute last drop of oil out of quart cans after servicing a customer. I always wondered how many drained cans it took to make a new quart. An original "green" guy: waste not, want not.
A huge hug, Sandie. You were always there cheering Mickey on!!

Mike and I are sitting here this evening talking about Mickey and the rest of your family. Remembering how he searched for just the right car for us on more than one occasion and how he joked about how particular and specific we were. What a wonderful and happy person he was. It has been a privilege of mine for many years to know him and his entire family. My heart goes out to all of you for this tremendous loss.
