Brunhilde Van Hout Obituary

Brunhilde (Hilde) (Schneider) Van Hout

September 2, 1931~ January 27, 2013

Born in Indonesia (Madura) Brunhilde was the youngest of five sisters and a brother, and a star tennis player who loved to rescue animals, read and dance. On December 24th, 1952 she married Emile Remy Van Hout in Jakarta and they lovingly waltzed through 521/2 years together before his death in 2005. Political unrest moved the young family to Holland then to the USA where they lived briefly in Corvallis, OR then settled in Des Moines, WA, then traveled to Europe and Asia to visit relatives and friends. In 1965 they became US citizens. Hilde worked for an import/export business in the 1960s, for DSHS in the 1970s and for Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) in the 1980s as their office manager. A brilliant self-taught cook of wonderful Indonesian meals, her generous heart always welcomed one more around the table. Hilde and Remy hosted many Indonesian-Dutch (Indo) emigrants, opening their home until they found places of their own. Brunhilde loved her family: Gwendolyn Van Hout Knechtel (Grant), Suzanna Van Hout Lindeke (Dale), four grandchildren Alex, Karlia (Zac), Dee, Evan and great-granddaughter Adara, who called her Oma. A life celebration will be held this spring.

After all these years! Thank you, Hilde, for being my boss and my mentor when we worked together at ACRS. Your mentoring and guidance helped me launch a career for the following 31 years with King County. You were indeed a friendly force to be reckoned with. I truly respected you. In 1990, you introduced me to Indonesian cooking and gave me "The Indonesian Kitchen" cookbook, which I am using today, April 24, 2024. The aroma reminds me of our many ACRS picnics and the food you prepared. You're gone for now, as is Remy, but I know we shall meet again. Thank you, Hilde.

I knew Hilde to be a staunch supporter of the values of kindness and inclusiveness. Missed? Certainly. Remembered? yes. Did she help to make the world a better place? Absolutely! To the larger family: I am sorry for your loss.

Tante Hilda as she was to my brother and I was the most amazing women, second only to my mom. I loved her like a second mom and she always had her door open to everyone. She was my moms dearest friend. They are now cooking a feast for all in heaven... you will be missed dearly...love you always

Hilde was such a great lady! I loved her sense of humor, her grace and appreciation of beauty, her wisdom, her loving and honorable spirit. Her legacy lives on within her daughters and, indeed, in all of us whose lives she touched. Dance on, Hilde!

I had the good fortune to enjoy her extraordinary cooking and her generosity as a hostess. It was back in my college days, a long time ago now, but I have never forgotten those wonderful meals.

No kinder, gentler, more generous person in the world. Will miss her forever.

"Ik zeg geen grote woorden maar hoop dat een klein gebaar volstaat en dat tranen het verdriet verdunt." Veel sterkte toegewenst in deze droevige tijd aan mijn beide nichtjes Gwen en Suzy met aanhang
