Michael Dueker Obituary

Michael J. Dueker

Michael J. Dueker, born December 6, 1963, passed January 29, 2014. He was a loving husband and father who was a guiding light in the daily lives of his wife, Alicia and son, Markus. His family, friends and colleagues appreciated his brilliant mind. He will be remembered as always being fun, kind, smart and witty. He loved traveling, running and reading and was the master scheduler of family activities. He will always be remembered and loved.

Mike graduated from Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, OR as Valedictorian in 1982. He attended the University of Denver, Whitman College and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1986 with a BA in Mathematics and Minor in Spanish. He received his M.A., in Economics from Northwestern University in 1987, and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington in 1991. He was a Research Economist and Assistant Vice-President at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, 1991-2008. In 2008 he joined Russell Investment as Chief Economist for North America.

While with the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank he developed a model of U.S. recessions that provided the basis for a business cycle index. As Chief Economist for Russell Investments, Mike wrote for Russell's Market Outlook publications, forecasting the business cycle and the target federal funds rate. He developed and maintained a business cycle index published monthly on Russell.com.

Mike is survived by his wife, Alicia; his son, Markus; parents, Ken and Donna Dueker; and sister, Michelle Carey.

My nephew Mike is always in my heart. I have always felt that he left when he did because he was needed on the other side to help guide us through these tough times on the earth. I well remember the last time that I saw Mike. I had lunch with Mike and my sister Donna. He was wearing a light aqua colored shirt. He was a gentle soul---had a sweet laugh. Oh so bright, and oh, so humble. Always remembered with love.

Mike was special even as an undergraduate. I was lucky to have the opportunity to be his teacher and then colleague, where he knew more than I. Mike was one of the kindest people I ever knew and will be missed. My condolences to his family during this difficult time.
