RICHARD STEIN Obituary

Richard Bennett Stein
April 4, 1936 - Sept. 10, 2012
Richard Bennett Stein passed away of a heart attack while pursuing one of his many passions - hiking and fishing the North Fork River in the Bitter Root Valley outside Hamilton, Montana.
Born in San Francisco, the son of Victor and Frances Ledwith Stein, he had two brothers; Robert Stein (deceased) and Albert Stein. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1954. He was inducted into the Burlingame High School Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his accomplishments in football and as an All-State Champion pole vaulter.
Dick attended Stanford University on a track and football scholarship, earning his BS in Economics and an MBA. He was also a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
True to his ironman nature, Dick played football both ways. He was a starting defensive end and, on offense, was the favorite target of future San Francisco 49ers All-Pro Quarterback John Brodie. During the 1955 season, Stanford had a record of 6-3-1 and just missed playing in the Rose Bowl.
After college, Dick was invited to be a member of the well-known Tuesday Downtown Operators and Observers society, confirming his status as one of San Francisco's top 25 eligible bachelors. In 1965, he married Lyn Cavanaugh Stein in Chicago, Illinois. They returned to California where they spent the next 47 years of their life together raising four children.
Dick began his career at Ernst & Young and went on to become a financial executive at Dymo Industries. Dick later was the Chief Financial Officer at Esselte Corporation, Shaklee Corporation and World of Wonder Toys. His profession took him across the Atlantic where he and his family lived and worked in Switzerland and England. Prior to retirement, he was the President of the senior living and healthcare company, The Hillsdale Group.
Dick had a passion for life and lived his to the fullest. As a member of the Burlingame Country Club, The Stock Farm Club (Montana) and St. Georges Hill Golf Club in Surrey, England, he pursued his love of tennis, golf, bridge as well as the art of socializing. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fly-fishing and hiking in his adopted home of Hamilton, Montana.
He will be remembered by his family and friends for the lasting impression he made upon them through his compassion, generosity, sense of humor and, most certainly, his strong-willed nature. Dick enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, including his four children and seven grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Lyn Cavanaugh Stein, his children, Betsy Stein of Burlingame, California, Robert Stein (Marian) of Burlingame, CA, Patrick Stein (Jenny) of Nederland, CO, and Kerry Stein Mobley (Jeff) of Golden, CO.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at St. Matthew's Catholic Church Chapel, San Mateo at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mission Hospice and Home care of San Mateo or the charity of your choice.

one of the greats, from a San Mateo and Cal-Berkeley guy to this Burlingame and Stanford guy. I remember Dick and Bob from high school. Their accomplishments were many and they leave great memories along with the sadness.
