JIM HOGAN Obituary

Jim Hogan
Died on November 8, a loser to cancer at age 71.
Although Jim was born, raised and educated in the US, his adult life was spent in Canada and he was a proud citizen and lover of the Frozen North. After getting his Ph.D. in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of Chicago, he became a Professor of Chemistry at McGill University in Montreal. He was very fortunate to spend a year with Glenn Seaborg at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, and also had experiments at the Los Alamos, Argonne and Brookhaven National Labs, as well as Oxford U. and UK Atomic Energy in England and the National Institutes of Nuclear Physics in Milan and Catania, Italy.
His love was science, but his passion was teaching. He taught freshman chemistry to over 10,000 students at McGill while winning the McGill Faculty Award for best teacher, as well as the teaching award of the Canadian Prime Minister. During many years as Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Chemistry Department he was advisor, counsellor and "Daddy" to a thousand chemistry students.
He later met and married Susan Metheny of Piedmont, and shared the last fifteen years of his life loving, laughing and including much travel with her, while living in Oakland. During that time he taught for six years at Bentley School, in Lafayette, having been given the job of, "building a science department" at what was then a new school. Upon retiring, the school dedicated the yearbook to him.
He leaves his three daughters, Betsy (David Fraser) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Stephanie, of Toronto, and Catherine (Darryl Edwards) of Montreal, and five grandchildren, Jack, Tom and Matt Fraser and Gracie and Tess Edwards. From his soulmate Susan he also acquired her four children, Alan Metheny, Johnny "Love" Metheny, Molly Lewis and Anne Bone, and her eight grandchildren.
Jim and Suze were romantic loves, Cal fans and indulgent travelers. Those last fifteen years were among the happiest of his life.
The family would like to thank Kaiser Hospice, and most especially Tonya Lyons, RN for her compassionate care.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Cancer League Inc. (www.thecancerleagueinc.org) or a charity of choice.
