Rachel was so kind and delightful--I will always remember how much effort she dedicated to finding something my cousin visiting from NYC (with many dietary issues) could eat, saying she couldn't be happy until my cousin was able to eat something that she'd enjoy. She was an institution, and truly admired by so many people!

Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un! We belong to God, and to God we all return! May Allah Most Merciful grant Mercy to her soul, forgive her sins, erase her errors, and grant her an honored station in His Garden! Amin! May Allah send Peace and ease to the hearts of all her family and friends, and strengthen their faith in the life to come! Amin!

Rachel (we knew her as Rose) was always a bright and cheery presence at Louie's. I and my friends went there often in the 70's and 80's and ALWAYS asked to be seated in her section. My condolences to her family. I know you must have loved her as much as we did...her "found" family.

I moved to San Francisco in 1971, and Louie's was a must-visit for a new resident in The City. Rachel was such a treasure! For decades, whenever I'd go to Louie's, we'd hope to see her and hear her address one and all as "Dearie!" Our sincere condolences to all those close to her. San Francisco has lost one of its iconic personalities!

For those of us who had the pleasure of meeting Rachel, we were forever touched by her friendly welcoming smile and upbeat voice as she constantly refilled our coffee cups while reciting special available treats. Always a flower in her hair, she'd temptingly offer, "We have a nice danish for you today, Darling!" Louis' has never been the same without her. Rest in peace, Rachel. Deep and sincere condolences to those closest to her. From a frequent Louis' customer and an outer Sunset resident since 1978.

I met Rachel many years ago after she started living at the care facility down the street from where I live. She would walk daily with here caregivers, and she would always stop to say hello and talk a little. That's when I learned of her legacy at Louis' Restaurant. She met many of my friends and I don't think there was a single person who didn't know who she was or that hadn't been served by her at some time. She was so proud of her service to others while working at Louis', and her being honored in "Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress".
She had a remarkable memory, always remembering my children's names and asking about them. She loved flowers, classical music and fragrances, and cherished her books and photos of her life. She was always a delight. I will miss her.
