Eugene Marty Obituary

Eugene (Gene) Jules Marty, Jr. 1927-2010 A man of great faith and a true gentleman passed away on October 20, 2010, surrounded by his large loving family. Eugene Jules Marty was born on February 21, 1927 to Eugene J. Marty and Pauline Aubert in San Francisco. Gene attended St. James Grammar School and St. Ignatius High, graduating in 1944. His studies at the University of San Francisco were interrupted in 1945 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Corpsman until 1946. After graduating in 1949 from USF, he married the love of his life, Yvonne Boutet. Gene was recalled to the Navy in 1950 during the Korean conflict. After his release from the service, he began his long career in the securities business, where his profound integrity and concern for his clients won the respect of all on the street. Up to the onset of his final illness, he continued to work for his son Johns investment firm. Gene was very active in his parish and his childrens school communities. He is Past President of St. Annes Fathers Club, served on the Board of Presentation Fathers Club. He is Past President of St. Ignatius Alumni Board and the former Mission Optimist Club, the treasurer of the Lafayette Club, served as a member of the Board of St. Anthonys Foundation and, currently on the Board of the San Francisco Network Ministries. Gene also served as an Ambassador for the University of San Francisco Alumni Association. He is a recipient of the Christ, the King Award given by St. Ignatius College Preparatory. Last month Gene became the first recipient of the Gateway Award bestowed by the St. Anthonys Foundation. Gene also enjoyed reading, gardening and fishing. He was an avid (and sometimes rabid) San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants fan. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his home in the Napa Valley. He is survived by his cherished wife of 61 years, Yvonne, and his greatest legacy, his children; Suzanne Gayrard (Franco), Paul Marty, Melanie Engler (Dean), Lisa Marty, Laura Carcieri (Martin), Christine Phillips (David), John Marty (Nancy), and Celeste Marty; grandchildren, Aimee Hilliard (James), Michael Gayrard (Roula), Jenelle Cooper (Justin), Marty Gayrard, Matthew Marty, Ryah Marty (Kevin Fabris), Vaughn, Colin, and Forrest Engler, Nicole Phillips and Danielle, Jennifer, Jack and Joey Marty; great grandchildren, Dylan, Madison and Aidan Hilliard, and Kayla Cooper. I learned of Gene's passing yesterday - moments after I said to others how much I'd like to get in touch with him again. I came to know him at St. Anthony's and like others, were taken by his kindness, knowledge, good humor, and devotion to the service of others. I always chose to sit next to Gene at our often-long board meetings as he was the kind of person you wanted to be around in the arduous times as well as the easy ones. I'm so very sorry to have not known Gene was ill, of his passing, and his memorial Mass. The blessing is my memory is one of a vibrant, dapper gent conversing about the Dining Room, the block in the Mission where we both had lived tho' 50 years apart, and his cooperative lawn-watering arrangements with neighbors ... he told entertaining stories about everything! What a fine person he was.
With deepest sympathy to the Marty family,

To the Marty Family. Gene was really a man of great stature and trusted friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I first became acquainted with Gene in 1974 as a member of St. Anne's Parish when Monsignor Foudy was setting up the weekly Parish bingo game which flourished for many years and we all enjoyed having Gene on board. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and a pleasure to work with. He continued to be a dedicated member of his Parish throughout his life. He was an active volunteer to many organizations throughout his life also. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Genes life was said at St.Annes of the Sunset Church on November 13th to full capacity attendance and with ten priests on the altar in concelebration of the Mass, it being a final testimony to Genes giving and caring throughout his life.
He was a 57 year member of the Young Men's Institute-- YMI San Francisco Council #1.
With deepest sympathy to his wife Yvonne and all his family at large. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

To the Marty Family. Gene was one of the sweetest and most upbeat men I've ever known. Always working on behalf of others to better the world for everyone. I was so sad to learn of his passing. But the heavens are a better place today for having him. I enjoyed working with him.

To The Marty Family:

As you remember, and celebrate, a life
so well lived, please know how grateful we are that you let the rest of us share his gentle, caring, soulful spirit too. Working with, and then volunteering with, Gene at
St. Anthony's has been a real privilege. We shall miss him, and
we thank God that all of our paths crossed.
