David Morgenstern Obituary

David Eli Morgenstern

Nov 25, 1952 - May 4, 2015

David Morgenstern, cantorial soloist, technology writer and editor, and dedicated father and husband, died Monday, May 4, 2015 suddenly of an apparent heart attack. Aged 62, David was a longtime member and clergyman of Beth Israel Judea and resident of the Parkmerced neighborhood of San Francisco.

Born in Los Angeles, David grew up to attend both San Jose and San Francisco State Universities, ultimately taking his degree in Music from the latter. Passionately interested in Reform Judaism, he was a young member of Temple Isaiah in Lafayette; attended and worked in sculpture at Camp Swig under the tutelage of Helen Burke; and spent 1970-71 in Israel working and learning Hebrew at the Kibbutz Manara on the Lebanon border.

It was at San Francisco State that David met his wife Inara Morgenstern, a pianist and music teacher. The two were married in 1976 and were blessed with their daughter Ariela in 1978. David's life was marked by rich enthusiasms, from the trivial to the sublime, and a deep generosity of spirit that motivated a life of service to his many communities. He brought happiness to everyone he encountered, and always said just the right thing with kindness. His joy and energy blessed all of us and elevated us to be better and happier people.

Throughout the 1980s, David worked at the J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State, where he served as Union Shop Steward for the campus AFL-CIO chapter. David's interest in computing led him to help found the Berkeley Mac Users' Group, BMUG, one of the world's largest independent computer user groups. He served as the group's chairman of the board of directors from 1989-91 and would coordinate the monthly meetings of the BMUGWest group for the rest of his life.

David's devotion to computing led him into a long writing career, and he became a writer and eventually Editor at MacWEEK, an influential trade magazine covering the Macintosh market, and its successor eMediaWeekly, as well as holding editorial positions at eWeek. Most recently David was a blogger for "The Apple Core" on ZDNet.

David was a stunning singer and performer, and was an opera singer for many years during and after college. His love of music and Judaism led him to his most recent career as cantorial soloist for Beth Israel Judea.

After filling in for BIJ's cantor during vacations and a medical leave, David became the natural choice to fill the role permanently, beginning in 2008. "During this time, my own spiritual journey grew in importance to me," he said in an article for jweekly.com. "The passing of my mother and parents-in-law, the experience of having a child grow up, being a manager of an enterprise: Sometimes those kind of experiences can test you. For me they led back to our tradition." His continued professional development as a cantor led to extensive pastoral counseling and life-cycle rituals.

David's love of his daughter Ariela, today a professional actor and singer in New York, was immense. For many years, David and Inara have also been the proud caretakers of two Maine Coon cats, Minnie and Hercule.

David is mourned by wife Inara, daughter Ariela (Marc), brother Jamie (Linda) and sister Ann (Jeff). May his memory be for a blessing.

Funeral services took place on May 6. A Shiva Minyan will be held on May 7 at 7:00 pm at Congregation Beth Israel Judea, 625 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Congregation Beth Israel Judea.

I was indeed saddened to learn of David Morgenstern's passing in May 2015. While in the SF Bay Area, I was a member of BMUG West in early 1990s and worked with David at MacWEEK in 2000 and always appreciated his professionalism, positive approach and helpfulness as well as his personality and wider worldview. While we have all lost someone very special in his demise, we are fortunate to have the legacy of his written, educational and artistic endeavors. He inspired many of us to learn and to do and be better.

I cannot express how deeply saddened I was when I heard David had passed. He was a great friend, long after we had worked together at Ziff and our lives led us elsewhere. He was the most generous, genuine man, and I am grateful to have known him

In working with David at MacWEEK and BMUG, I knew he was fun, inspirational, caring, and beyond competent... driven, passionate, engaged. But I thought that everybody in the world was like that, every workplace and community would have that level of relationship. I've spent the last quarter century looking to find and recreate that special something, at work and in living neighborhoods.

During his funeral service, two words came to me: "Elan" and "polymath."

We definitely want to do a special BMUG meeting celebrating his life, contributions and inspiration.

As CEO of MacPublishing in 1997 I had the opportunity to work with David on MacWEEK and eMediaweekly - it was a challenging time for the industry and the company but David's personality, warmth and editorial passion provided incredible leadership. After a hard day's work during a relaxing drink at Kate O'Briens, over time I got to learn more about David, his passions outside work and his pride in his family. I will always value those interactions with him. What a wonderful colleague.

One of the few joys for me of attending industry events was the chance to see David and talk about anything but computers. A frequent topic of conversation was Ariela's performances and her burgeoning career -- he was just bursting with pride and love when he talked about her. He always had a story that featured Inara, and he glowed when he spoke of her.

We will miss his bear hugs and booming, joyful voice.

An amazingly rich life of giving and learning. David's immense legacy lives on in all whom he touched and mentored.

David was just one of those good people. He most recently visited and sang to my mother which made her very happy. I enjoyed many years singing and praying together with David. I hope he, my father, and Cantor Henry are singing and praying together in heaven.

I am very saddened to hear of David's passing. I met him in Jr. high school in Moraga. He was quite close to my brother Eric and I through high school and college years. I remember him as a very funny guy. I lost contact with him for about 40 years. Ironically, I last heard from him when Eric died of a heart attack 3 years ago. I cherish his memory. -Rev. Oh, Daivd...I am still so shocked and hope that your family will keep posting on FB so that we may be a part of your memory. Every night we played Scrabble, chatted and I grew to know your family, your heart, your CATS and your intellect. You will be missed so very much for your loving spirit and joy. Love to you and your family, Paula Peterson

My wife Jacqueline and I were so surprised and deeply saddened to learn of David's passing. We are away and travelling when we heard the news. David and Inara were friends and neighbours for many years to my parents Ruth & Bert Sugarman, sharing many years of laughter and conversation. He also added a moving and personal aspect to each of their memorial services contributing his beautiful voice and personal affection for them into the service. David brought much to this world and my family extends our heartfelt condolences and most sincere wishes to his wife Inara and and his daughter Ariela and to all his family and friends who must suffer his passing.
