Geraldine McCarthy Obituary

Geraldine McCarthy Of San Francisco, died unexpectedly but peacefully and surrounded by family on Nov. 17, 2010 at the age of 80. She was married to the late Denis McCarthy for 44 years and is survived by her two children Mary and Joe, son-in-law Dan Casey and daughter-in-law Siobhan Lawlor. Loving Nana to seven grandchildren; Jack, Patrick, Danny, Liam, Conor, Clare and Rory. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews around the country. A native of Chicago, Illinois who migrated to San Francisco in 1958. She was the fifth of Herman and Edna Voss' eight children and a product of St. Thomas Aquinas high school on Chicago's South Side. She had an active career in administrative jobs over the years most notably with the Dept. of Defense Logistics for 22 years. She was an active parishioner and enjoyed volunteering on many committees at her beloved St. Stephen's since 1965. Her life, however, was best defined by her devotion to family. She took great joy and had great pride in her grandkids and was always willing to tell you about their latest achievement. She absolutely adored her siblings: Betty McDevitt, the late Mary Sullivan, the late Donald Voss, Shirley Maloney, Ginger Walsh, Ronnie Connolly and Joe Voss. She lived for any news on their families that would arrive and was very proud to be part of such a tremendous clan. She was social to her core and a magnet for friends both young and old. She was never one to miss a party and certain to bend your ear for a good long time. The wisdom of her simple philosophies will continue to guide us through life's ups and downs. Family and friends are invited to attend the 4:00 PM visitation and the 5:00 PM Rosary on Sunday, 11/21, a Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, 11/22 ALL at St. Stephen's Church, 601 Eucalyptus Dr, SF. In lieu of flowers donations to the Daniel J. Linehan Scholarship Fund at St. Ignatius College Prep are requested.

Dear Mary and Joe and the Casey and McCarthy Clan, please accept our sympathy and love for you all and Aunt Geri. Her laugh was infectious and I loved conversations with her about big issues. She had a lot of insight. Our family is diminished, but enriched by knowing her. I'll always appreciate the fun we had the last time I saw her in Philly! I'm so missing her send-off. I know it will be thoughtful and beautiful and wish I could be with you all. Love, Peggy Clark and family
P.S. We'll light a candle at the Grotto as soon as we can.

Our hearts go out to you Joe, Mary and your families. You were deeply blessed to have a wonderful, loving mother AND father. I hope it's of consolation that she and Uncle Denis are once again reunited. I will always remember Aunt Geri's smile, and her great pride in and love of your family. You all are in our prayers. Love, Russ, Kathy, Andrew and Mark
