Richard Haber Obituary

Richard Haber June 4, 1914 to Oct. 15, 2010 Richard Haber passed away Oc-tober 15, 2010, at his home in Kensington.
A third generation San Franciscan, he attended Grant Elementary and Galileo High School. He graduated from Stanford in '36, MBA '39.
Married in 1945 to Joan Mayer Stern. They had three sons: Philip (deceased), Tom (Jeanne), and Jim (Cheryl). There are five Haber grandchildren: Jesse, Mike, Kristy, Will and Katie.
A condominium at Northstar fostered many family get-togethers for thirty years, with hiking, skiing and other activities, until Richard finally hung up his skis at age 85. Joan and Richard took extensive travel trips, hiking with groups from Sienna to Rome, the Inca Trail, Canadian Rockies, Copper Canyon and many others.
Richard had a varied career. He enlisted in the Navy when France fell, in 1940. After laying anti-submarine nets in the Bay, he spent the war years in the Pacific, commanding a small ship. After the war, he worked three years helping to dismantle the OPA (Office of Price Administration). From 1952-70, his business, Telerent, supplied televisions in hospital and hotel rooms throughout the Bay Area. Active in state and local Democratic campaigns, he also served as Contra Costa chairman for Kennedy, in 1960. From 1977-91, he was an assistant to the Dean at the University of California Business School.
He considered his years in the Navy in WW II, his work at the Business School, and a solo six month trip in Europe in 1936 to be the highlights of his life. From his travels he brought home an appreciation of other cultures that extended to his longtime work for immigrant rights, as a member of the Board of the International Institute of the East Bay.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Sunday, November 21, 2PM-5PM, at the Faculty Club at the University of California, in the Heyns Room.
