I, too, was very sad to hear about Uncle Bill this past week. I will so miss his letters and our phone conversations. He always assured me that he was doing his exercises so that he could maybe see us again at another army reunion. I'm sad that I wasn't able to get back out to California to visit with him one last time.
He was always so upbeat and always so lovable. I'm so glad that I've kept most of the letters I received from him and will have warm memories of him and his wonderful stories.
Uncle Bill, I love you and will miss you so much and hope that you are sitting in Heaven, catching up with my precious mom and all the wonderful members of our 126th AAA Gun Battalion family that we have also lost.
Heartfelt sympathies to your family.

Bill will be deeply missed by his 126th AAA Gun Battalion members and their families. I will truely miss "Uncle Bill's" letters and having him with us at the Army Reunions. My father, Henry H. Smith, served in WW II with pride along with Bill. My sincere condolences to his family on their loss of a wonderful person. My God keep you and bless you. Love, Deb Smith

Bill, your remaining buiddies of the 126th AAA Gun Battalion will miss and always remember you as our cook, chief chef and buddy. You kept our battalion rolling during WW II. As I have said before, you were the best cook in the Army, but you also gave us a lot of joy and laughter through your engaging personality. We'll see you in Heaven.

I was so sad to hear about "Uncle" Bill this week. Uncle Bill was a true star at our 126th AAA Gun Battalion reunions each year. The stories he'd have! I always looked forward to our traditional top-of-the-head kiss when Bill would arrive at the airport ... and so did HE! I, including many others, always enjoyed his weekly letters to us all ... sometimes more than once a week. He would send me articles from the San Fran newspaper on anything pertaining to Yosemite as he knew how much I loved hiking in the mountains. He loved the pictures of my adventures each year and told me that he'd have some in full view so he could see them every day.
Another way Uncle Bill would make me laugh is that once he knew where our reunions would be, he'd study a city map until he knew exactly what roads to take you to anywhere in the city. He told me he would sit in a certain place when he studied the map(s), but we won't go there (HA!) He would count down the days to the next reunion right after the one we just had, and keep us all posted by mail as to how many days left until he would see us again.
He was so proud of his Portuguese heritage that he would tell all the women at our reunions that he was quite the Latin lover. He would give us standards by which to choose men these days. What a guy he was!
Although Jan, Pam and I visited San Fran on my 50th birthday and spent a great time with Uncle Bill there having brunch at The Cliff House, wondering if we'd ever get out of his car safely--running through stop signs and such (smile) through the City as we did a bit of sightseeing, I kick myself for not going back out there to visit again. But I will cherish the letters he wrote and the phone conversations we had over the years.
I love and miss you, Uncle Bill!! (tears)
