Paul and my father, Frank Benninghoff, worked for years together at Kaiser Steel in Fontana, California. My father always held Paul in the very highest regard and mentioned often what a wonderful family the Skvarnas were. For almost 20 years, we lived across the street from the Skvarna family on North First Avenue in Upland. My father moved us there in 1949, after taking a year to build his "dream" home there - far away enough from the soot and grime of the steel mill yet close enough to drive easily every day. Paul and Frank were of my "hero" generation of proud Americans who taught their kids the best lessons they could, loved their wives for life and adored their hometown. My memories of the two Skvarna boys, Paul and Carl, was their upstanding lifestyles so predominant in the 50s when we grew up. I also remember their Ford Thunderbird (or, was it a Corvette?) - you know I've forgotten for sure but I do remember as a 13-year old that this car was the neatest red chickmobile anyone could come up with at that time. As both Paul and Carl, I remember, went to USC (where I later graduated a couple times) I thought how could it get any better? Hot red car, hot university and two good-looking brothers having the time of their lives. Well, those memories of North First Avenue are among the best of my life. I pray for the soul of Paul and take joy in his happiness now in God's hands. As each of our turns come, it is also my prayer that we carry on the wonderful traditions of fatherhood that Paul and Frank gave to us. Charles Benninghoff
