Forrest Dunn Obituary

George Forrest Dunn, Jr.

Services celebrating the life of The Honorable Forrest Dunn will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Chapel, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA with Dr. Rowena White officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue, Shreveport, LA.

Former State Representative Forrest Dunn, Jr., who served 12 years as Director of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, died October 15, 2016 in Bossier City, LA after a sudden illness.

Forrest was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Young Dunn, his parents, George Forrest Dunn, Sr. and Gladys Malone Dunn, and son, James Forrest "Jimmy" Dunn. He is survived by two children, Linda Dunn Turner and husband, Danny Bob and Robby Jack Dunn and wife, Nancy Marabella; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Cindy Dunn McCloud, mother of his children, Rachel Dunn Williamson and her husband, Don; and special friend, Sylvia Adams.

He was born in Plain Dealing, LA September 6, 1928. At the age of 15, he joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Richmond. Back home he acquired his GED and worked for Haverty's Furniture Store until he opened Dunn Furniture in 1955 where it was a successful business for over in 30 years.

Forrest was well known in Louisiana as the museum director, a job he took in 1998; he was proud of his accomplishments there. He was especially pleased with work which launched the museum's affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution - the only Louisiana public museum with that distinction.

He contributed greatly and in many ways to his community. Although he served in numerous capacities, including three terms as State Representative, he felt his greatest achievement was co-founding H.A.P. House for the severely handicapped, which is housed at Barksdale Air Force Base. He was also elected to the Caddo Parish School Board, serving with distinction during the early and contentious years of court-ordered integration. He served as President of Holiday in Dixie and the Louisiana State Fair Executive Committee and was Chairman of the Ambassador's Club. He was Campaign Chairman for United Way, Chairman of The Arc and Community Organization for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Dunn was a member of the Louisiana State Fair Board Executive Committee and served on the executive board for Shreveport Parks and Recreation Council and the Shreveport Transit and Study Committee.

He was also a delegate to the White House Conference on the Handicapped and on the Governor's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped. He was a member of the Shreveport Housing Authority.

In 2002 he was selected by The Times as a Leader of the New Century and in 2010 received the Legend Award from the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau. He was a recipient of a Special Humanitarian Award for Community Council was inducted into the Bossier High School Hall of Fame.

Mr. Dunn has also been honored by Norwela Council of Boy Scouts of America with a "This is Your Life" tribute. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and St. Mark's.

Honoring Forest as pallbearers will be Sean Dunn, Robert Hal Gatti, lll, Hayden Gatti, Robert Hal Gatti, Jr., Autry Lowry, Jr., Woody Schick, and Jay Turner. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Leon Bain, Jerry Boughton, Eugene Bryson, Joe Cooper, Steve Culbertson, Anthony Harris, Ernest Lampkins, Billy Montgomery, Gil Shanley, Mickey Shirley, Wayne Waddell, and Executive Committee of the Louisiana State Fair.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Friends of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Rd., Shreveport, LA 71103 or Shreveport/ Bossier Rescue Mission, 901 McNeal St., Shreveport, LA 71101, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Dear Forrest,
Ever since my family and I met you, back when you were recently appointed as Director of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum of Shreveport, we had a special relationship. You had a way of making us feel at home and took such good care of us in the long months that we were in Shreveport for restoration work in the Museum. You introduced us to so many wonderful people in town, and kept us company yourself.
You were so supportive of the projects we worked on, and so enthusiastic that it was a joy to work for you. Positive people like yourself are a gift when our roads meet, a celebration of life and friendship.
We will ever be grateful to you for your friendship and your good work with the Museum and all that you touched, and we think of you with affection.

Linda and Robby,
For the first 20 years of my life, our families shared so many wonderful memories. Sunday nights after church at friends' home, Sunday afternoon at Queensboro Park, Friday nights at ballgames, and on and on. Those memories were made because our parents were so fond of each other. Living across the street from "the Dunns" was a continuation of those fun times. I'm sure my parents greeted your dad with open arms when he reached those pearly gates. My prayers are with you and the entire family.

In 1969 Forrest & Rachel were in Dallas for a furniture buying trip and saw me going north on Central Expressway on a Saturday when I had told my Mom I couldn't come home from Texas A&M for the weekend because I had to much studying to do. But, I ended up in Dallas with a buddy instead and I was busted!

Forrest was a fixture in my younger years at Emmanuel Baptist.
Very sorry for this loss and my prayers to all of you.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to George Forrest Dunn, Jr. our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Forrest. And to Forrest it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Navy. Forrest, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Forrest's family and loved ones.

Robby and Family: It is with great sadness I hear of the passing of your Father . Mr, Dunn was Stalwart Pillar of the great Sate of Louisiana. I have a personal story of his compassion and caring.... when one night my Mother found a large sum of money in a parking lot and turned it into the Police Dept. Mr. Dunn got word of it and invited her down to his Furniture Store, and had her pick out a bedroom set . I truly believe Men like your Father will have a special place in Heaven! We have lost another great American and tremendous Library of our history! Sincerely LD Sutton Jr FPHS 67
