CHARLES NEWTON Obituary

NEWTON, CHARLES T. Sept. 1, 1917 to Sept. 30, 2010 Charles Newton died at home in Del Mar, his wife and partner of 67 years, Dorothy by his side. He was predeceased by two sons, Terence and Stanley. He is survived by daughter-in-law Mary Sullivan, sons Tom (wife Julie) and John (wife Kate), five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Charles and Dorothy met on the steps of Glendale Methodist Church while in high school. He graduated from University of Missouri School of Journalism, served in World War II, then returned to Glendale to start their family. Chuck was in the communications business all his life: advertising, public relations, promotion, art direction, consulting. In retirement, his advice and opinions were sought by candidates and campaigns, friends and neighbors. He served on city boards, commissions, and the County Water Authority. He saved rain water. He supported community theater and he read everything. He was a native son who knew California roadways like no one else, always looking for a good creek to fish. He simply loved to work in his yard. He made his own adobe bricks. He knew how to set type and to send email to a grandchild. He had an eye for aesthetics and color. He made for Dorothy, a cup, a banner, a painting, a poem each year on their anniversary. He listened with intensity. And he had a booming laugh like none other. Services will be private.

Dear Chuck,
You and Dorothy are among the delights of my life in Del Mar. I so enjoyed sitting at your kitchen table visiting and talking politics. Thank you so much for your advice and support. I will miss you.
Your friend,
Crystal

Memories of Charles –
“Fetching” “ neat” “nifty” – Charles often used these words – words from another age, but words I loved hearing him use as they were always spoken with delight and a twinkle in his eye.
In my mind, Charles and his wife Dorothy have always epitomized elegance and beauty - physically, mentally and spiritually. Aside from being a very handsome couple themselves, they surrounded and submerged themselves in all the beauty life has to offer. Always voracious readers and supporters of the arts, Charles and Dorothy took equal delight in the simple things in life – the crunch of Fall leaves under their feet or finding the perfect fruit at a country fruit stand.
Charles’ love of fine things began, first and foremost, with his true love, his foundation, his perfect partner in life – his wife Dorothy. His love of the finer things extended to the several Jaguar XKE’s he owned through the years. During one period, Charles was commuting between San Diego and his office in LA. He claimed it didn’t bother him one bit and in fact, he loved these long drives in his XKE. Besides the sheer joy of driving , he said it was his best “thinking time.” And from his wide range of knowledge and thoughtful opinions, you just knew Charles was the kind of guy who was thinking all the time.
Charles was a man of the earth - working in the garden, working up a real sweat making his own adobe bricks, fly fishing in remote mountain streams. He enjoyed simple physical labor and the solitude of nature. Charles was a man of the mind – always learning, always inquisitive, always eager and able to discuss any manner of things. Charles was a man who built a very successful career in a very competitive field, yet he always seemed to have ample time for family, friends, and community, and took such joy in them all.
As a part of the Newton family many years ago, Charles was and will always remain dear to my heart.

My mom and Dorothy (Charles' wonderful wife) were best friends from junior high school. So as a child growing up in the 1950's we got to know the Newton family. Charles was one of the most wonderful people in our lives. He was kind, thoughtful, brilliant, down to earth and a pure delight to be around. I and my siblings (Frank, Lucy, Becky Nicholls) are so sad to hear this news. We send our love and deep sympathy to the family.

I am Chris Chapman's sister-in-law Judy. I met Charles a few times, but in reading his accomplishments and contributions, I'm sorry I did not know him better. What a gem he was! My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. May your heartaches soon be replaced with smiles and laughter as you remember the good times.

I am one of the 5 grandchildren and I can say from personal experience that he was an amazing man. A wonderful soul that I'm looking forward to seeing again some day. I believe he was the wisest man I knew, which is a shame that the world lost another one. There was so much to learn from him. I will miss him greatly. Love you Grandpa

To the Newton family: Please be comforted that Charles had a long and good life. His closeness to the natural speaks for the man he was. Anytime a fellow gardener passes, I am saddened and look forward to see what he's got growing in Heaven. Rest in peace Charles. We will continue to enjoy the family you and Dorothy created.
