LEEAN COOK Obituary

COOK, LEEAN "LEE" ROSE Leean "Lee" Rose Cook peacefully passed away with her husband at her side in the car on a La Jolla Street during the mid-afternoon on September 10, 2010. Lee was born in San Diego on May 1, 1932. Her father was Louis David-di Marino from Salerno, Italy and her Mother was Yolanda Ghio, born in San Francisco. They were married in Rome, Italy in 1927 and moved to San Diego in 1931. Lee attended St. Joseph Cathedral grade school, Cathedral High School through the 10th grade and was graduated from the San Diego High School in 1945. Lee attended the Kelsey & Jennings Business School. She worked for Barney & Barney Insurance and then at Etna Life Insurance in risk analysis. In 1952 Lee underwent a major surgery for varicose veins on the stomach portal vein that adversely affected her stomach function the rest of her life. This was caused by an umbilical cord infection at birth. Lee met her future husband Eugene "Gene" F. Cook at the Reveler's Club at the old San Diego Hotel ballroom in the fall of 1955. They fell in love and flew to Las Vegas on May 1, 1956 and were married at The Little Chapel Around the Corner that evening. Her husband was a Civil Engineer involved in the design of land development projects and was born in Nebraska, having moved to San Diego in 1952. Lee and Gene moved to their new home in La Jolla in 1962. They both became members of the St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church in 1963 and have been active members ever since. Lee also helped at a school for children with intellectual disabilities in 1980. Lee was an active member of the La Jolla Social Service League, Woman's Club and Scripps Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was the last president of the 75 year old Auxiliary. Lee was also a member of the La Jolla Republican Women, Federated. She served as a lay minister at the St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church and was a member of the Daughter's of the King and the St. Germaine Children Charity. Over their 54 years of marriage, Lee and Gene traveled through out the States, Canada, Mexico, England, Italy, Europe and Russia for their 50th wedding anniversary. Lee is survived by her devoted husband Gene. She has one brother Robert David-di Marino who survives her, along with his wife Eunice and their three children Christine, Maurice and Ernest. Lee will be deeply missed by her husband and all those who have know her. She has suffered greatly for the last two years from back pain and has been under the excellent care of the San Diego Hospice during the last ten weeks. A memorial service will be held at the St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church at Prospect and Silverado Streets in La Jolla at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2010.

Dear Mr. Cook,
I am the daughter of John C. Leppert. I have very fond memories of your wife Lee. She once gave me her own Raggy Ann and Andy dolls. It was love at first touch. I have no idea where they are now, but my smile is still here. I remember the painting my mother did of Lee. She was so beautiful.
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
