WALTER NEWTON Obituary

NEWTON, WALTER R. July 26, 1933 to Sept. 24, 2010 Walter Robert Newton, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, was 77 years old when he passed away at his home in Lakeside, California, in the early morning hours of September 24th, with his wife of 58 years, Hilda, at his side. His youngest daughter, Maureen, and her husband were also present. Walt, or "Newt" as he was affectionately known, also leaves behind two other daughters, his eldest, Colleen, and her husband, along with Kathie and her husband. Newt was the proud grandpa to Amanda, Matthew and Mallarie and great grandpa to Nathaniel. There is another great-grandson on the way. Walt's older brother, William Newton, passed away a few short weeks ago; Walt was never told. His youngest brother, Bobbie, passed away many years ago at the tender age of 29. Surviving siblings include a younger brother, John, who resides in New Jersey with his family, and a younger sister, Linda, who lives in Virginia with her husband. The Newton Family lived in Butler, New Jersey, for many years prior to relocating to Southern California, where the Newton girls attended school. Walt owned and operated Wanaque Auto Body for some 30 years and he would often been seen dropping the girls off at school in the purple and white tow truck or sometimes in one of the antique cars he collected and refurbished, much to the girls' chagrin. After moving to Southern California, Newt worked as an insurance adjuster before he "retired." He never really could adjust to working for somebody else, especially when he was "asked" to wear a tie to work. Seems the boss didn't consider his bollo a tie. After that he spent most of his time in his vegetable garden, puttering around the garage or the yard, or just spending time with the family and his beloved pug, Thumper. He loved that dog so much, he got a tattoo of her on his arm! Newt was well known for his signature handle bar mustache, which he always kept waxed and neatly curled, his cowboy boots and hat. Once he moved to California, he continued wearing his cowboy boots, sometimes even with shorts. He made an unforgettable impression on everyone he met. He will surely be missed.

I have many fond memories of Mr. Newton -- the twinkle in his eye, his laugh, that incredible handlebar mustache, and his sense of humor.

I will never forget the first time I had dinner as a teenager at your home in New Jersey. I was so nervous because for some reason I thought your family was very proper at the dinner table. I asked him to "please pass the baked potatoes" and he tossed it like a football to me! He certainly broke the tension -- I still laugh out loud every time I think about it.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. God bless you, Newt!

Dear Old Dad, How I will miss signing your cards like that. I used to love getting that (fake) rise out of you when I first started doing that, and then you started signing my cards like that. I feel so sad there will be no more cards to sign even as I am glad you will feel no more pain. Love, Colleen

Dear Old Dad, how I will miss addressing your cards like that. I loved getting that (fake) rise out of you when I first started doing it; and then it became our special tradition over the years and you signed my cards the same way. I feel so sad there will be no more cards to sign, even as I know you are free from your pain. I love you Dad. Colleen
