LUELLA BUSTAD Obituary

After living a long and full life, Luella May Bustad, went home to be with the Lord on December 11, 2014 at the age of 95.

Luella was born to Carl and Maude Nelson in Iola, Kansas, on November 18, 1919. They moved to Mount Vernon when she was 5 where she lived until 2011 when she moved to Puyallup to be closer to her family. Even after her move to Puyallup, Luella was always a Mt. Vernonite at heart.

If you knew Luella, you knew that from a young age she had a lot of spunk, knew what she wanted, and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She loved sports and played on a boy's baseball team before girls were allowed. At Mt. Vernon High School she was an accomplished baton twirler and majorette. After High School she attended Skagit Valley Junior College and later became a ceramics instructor.

The joy of Luella's life was always her husband, John Ragnar Bustad. They were married on May 1, 1940, and enjoyed a full and active life. Over their 60 years together, they raised two children, Janet and Johnny, took many Rotary trips, spent winters in the dessert, traveled, played tennis, enjoyed bridge club, and were Husky Football season ticket holders. Always enjoying these activities with their close friends and family whom they treasured. They loved their neighborhoods, both in town and at Juniper Beach. Rotary, Salem Lutheran Church, YMCA and the Hospital were dear to their hearts. Luella was proud of her honorary Rotary status and her Paul Harris Fellow Award.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1999; her daughter, Janet, in 1996; her parents, her two brothers, and her sister.

She is survived by her son John and his wife Janet of Puyallup, Washington; her three grandchildren Jason (Monica) Bustad of LaCenter, Washington, Jaime (Adam) Hestad of Seattle, Washington, and Janae (Andrew) Platter of Seattle, Washington and seven great-grandchildren: Jase, Jonah, and Jenna Lynn Bustad and Josiah, Asher, Roman and Ivy Hestad. These seven "little ones" brought her such joy and she always wished that her husband, John, could have known them.

There will be a "Celebration of Life" service at Salem Lutheran Church, 2529 N. LaVenture Road Mt. Vernon, Washington 98273 at 2:00 PM on December 17, 2014. She will be laid to rest in a private family service at Hawthorne Lawn Mausoleum.

Memorial gifts are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church, 2529 N. LaVenture Road Mt. Vernon, Washington 98273, Rotary International, One Rotary Center 1560 Sherman Ave Evanston, IL 60201-3698, or Skagit Valley Family YMCA 215 East Fulton Street Mt. Vernon, WA 98273.

Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.

I will miss Aunt Luella. I have fond memories of her from my childhood. She was a no nonsense woman with a great love of life and love for the extended Bustad clan. Our prayers are with the family.

The black Desoto with push button transmission, the day the jar of vinegar in the back seat of the Desoto caught fire at the beach...thanks to the sun.The sound of John's bells 'jingling' on Christmas Eve when he appeared as Santa and knowing Lu was up the street in 'the sleigh'! Years of great joy for my children and so many others'. Sitting at the kitchen table on 11th street, delivering warm bread out of the oven to Lu and John.So many memories, all Golden, all treasured!

We Love you Luella.

What a beautiful person Luella was! I enjoyed many Christmas celebrations at Fisher and Sons banquets, sitting at the table with Bob and JoAnne and Luella. She and John were very important people in Jerome's life. We are very thankful for their friendship.
