Joel MacMaster Obituary
Joel graduated from Loretto High School in Sault Ste. Marie, MI in 1956. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a Frogman (SEAL) on US Navy UDT (Underwater Demolitions) Team 12. Joel retired as a welder/diver for the local US Coast Guard Base. He enjoyed playing pool, softball, diving, family gatherings, participating in Veterans' events and was an avid Detroit Tigers and Lions fan. Joel was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and St. Mary's Church.
Surviving Joel are his daughters, Joelee (Vincent Teeple) MacMaster of Bay Mills, Michigan; Shawna MacMaster of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Mindy (Joe) Irvine of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Tammy (Jeff Bohrtz) Hancock of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Bonnie (Len) Legacy of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; and Penny (Jim) King of Ottawa, Ontario; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; Sisters, Marla (Lou) MacDonald of Barbeau, Michigan; Marcia Guin of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Gail (Ralph) Weiss of Wisconsin; step-father Harry Weigelt of Lena, Wisconsin and daughter-in-law Jeanie Place of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding Joel in death are his wife Lillian MacMaster, his parents Joseph MacMaster and Sara Weigelt, his son Randy "Sam" Place, his brother Donald MacMaster, and sister Debbie MacMaster.
Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Wednesday August 30, 2017 from 3-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday August 31, 2017 at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral at 1 p.m. with Father Sabastian Kavumkal as Celebrant. Burial will be at Mission Hill Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the VFW Post #3676 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
