Gerald Belsan Obituary

Gerald E. Belsan, of Scituate passed away January 24, 2015, at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston. Beloved husband of Nina (Giordano) Belsan, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, he was the devoted father of Jim Belsan and his wife Mary of Marshfield, Teresa Belsan of Scituate, Pete Belsan and his wife Michelle of Scituate and John Belsan and his wife Marcella of Scituate; proud grandfather of Rachael, Hannah, Julia, Elaina, Lily, Matty, Andrew, Jackson and Seamus; loving brother of sisters, Judy, Barbara and his late brother Jim. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late James and Lillian Belsan. He was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and later served in the United States Navy as an officer. This was followed by a long career in Defense Electronics. He moved to Scituate in the 1960s and instantly fell in love with the ocean. His passion for fishing evolved into the beginning of his family business, Belsan Bait & Tackle in Scituate. Above all else, he absolutely cherished his children and grandchildren and the time he spent with them. A funeral Mass will take place Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Visiting hours Friday 4-6 p.m. at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate. Interment private.

Nina, what shock to read of Jerry's passing. What a treasure for me to have known him and you in our youth. He was a cherished classmate at Kings Point and a dear friend. Yes, I regret I did not get in touch with him in the later years. Thanks for the series of photos that helped me see the wonderful family you both have and the joy filled pursuits that Jerry had. God Bless. George Ryan

Dear Nina, I was so sad to hear of Gerry's passing. I have so many happy memories of family get-togethers that were filled with love and laughter. I remember how Gerry shared his love of fishing with my Jimmy. He would take him to the favorite fishing spots and would always share lots of laughter when ever they were together. I hope you are comforted by your sweet memories and the love of your family. Love and Peace, Jean

Nina - I'm so very sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. Thank you for reaching out to let me know. I so want to talk with you, but haven't been able to get through, so I'm hoping you'll see this note. I'll keep trying until I get you, but until I do, please know my heart is with you and your family. I'll pick up where my father left off and light a candle for Jerry and that all of you, in time, will find peace. My love and heartfelt sympathies to you all.

Growing up behind the Belsan's in Egypt Park in the 1970's, I remember Mr. Belsan showing me and a few other kids how an expert fisherman skins a fish! Truly sorry to hear about his passing.

In the 1979s Jerry was my right hand man at the Hazeltine ASW Co. in Braintree. During all of that time he kept the financial house together. Jerry was a "behind the scenes person who was more interested in the success of the organization than in personnel recognition.

I will always remember Jerry as the only person I know who can cross his legs and both his feet still touch the floor!
