Genevieve Opsal Obituary

OPSAL,
Genevieve Elizabeth

Mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, and dear friend to many died peacefully at the age of 95 on May 15, 2011. She was born on February 6, 1916 in Lostwood, ND to Frank and Elizabeth Neumen and the family later moved to Williston, ND where she grew up, became a school teacher and met Clarence Opsal whom she married on July 20, 1940. She and her growing family moved to Spokane in 1951 where she established herself as the parent everyone admired, the homemaker few could ever hope to match and a person of good will to all. Her children and their friends fondly remember a seemingly endless supply of fresh homemade bread in the kitchen after coming home from school. But we remember her most for her unconditional love and acceptance which she gave to everyone in her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Clarence; her parents; three brothers, Francis, Raymond and Kenneth; and her sister, Jean. She is survived by her seven children and their spouses, first born son, Jon (Sharon) Opsal; five daughters, Penny (Gerry) Scollard, Cheryl (Jerry) Wichterman, Susie (Jim) Lawrence, Kathy (Bob) Hoff, and Peggy (Mike) Caprye; and last born son, Rick (Denise) Opsal; two brothers, Dale and Ronald Neumen; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be missed more than words can express. We love you Mom! Genevieve was a member of St Luke Lutheran Church where the Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 2:30 PM. Viewing will be on Friday from 12 to 8 PM and Saturday from 9 to 11 AM at HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 North Monroe Street, Spokane, WA. Memorial contributions may be made to St Luke Lutheran Church, 9704 North Division, Spokane, WA 99218.

Not sure what to say?

May 20, 2011

Kathy and all, just want you to know how sorry I am to hear of the loss of your mom, my beloved Auntie Gen. She was so sweet and kind, and was concerned for all of us. I remember how much my mom thought of her, she used to say that Gen was pure sweetness and she loved spending time with her. I will never forget all of the holidays and Sunday dinners, and of course the big lutefisk feeds. Your friendship and all of the times we went adventuring together, playing in the basements, and singing along to the player piano. We loved visiting the cousins. Lynne Jacobsen

I'm sorry to hear of th loss of your mother. I met Kathy at Deac. School of Nursing. Several times I spent the weekend at your house when there was so much snow and I couldn't go home to Cd"A. I always felt welcome. I also saw your mother at Lutheran Church Women conventions several times. My prayers are with you at this time.

I have beautiful memories of Gen, when she visited in Michigan and in Jon's and Sharon's home in Livermore. I think of her every Christmas, when I make her Christmas Bread for my family. May your precious memories of her bring you comfort and ease the ache in your hearts.

I grew up with Penny, went to Loma Vista Grade School and Shadle Park High School. I walked to school with Penny and met your mom during that time. My sympathy in the passing of your mother. I know the Lord will be more than a comfort. Thinking and praying for your family. Lenore Johns Elvington
