Mickey McCormick Obituary

McCORMICK, Mickey Haight Mickey McCormick passed away peacefully on August 13, with her family around her, from long-term health issues. With her brave, inquisitive, and adventurous spirit, she continued to travel and teach others about the joys and trials of seeing the world in spite of her health challenges. She was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1942 to Colonel Charles "Mac" and Irene McCormick. She lived in many locations throughout the U.S. and overseas before moving to Spokane, where she graduated from Holy Names Academy in 1961. She attended Washington State University, where she was affiliated with the Alpha Phi Sorority. While working for AT&T in Washington, D.C., she met and married the love of her life Joe Haight in 1966, and they had two daughters, Dede and Libbie. Returning to Spokane with her daughters, she earned her Bachelor's degree and MBA in Accounting from Eastern Washington University. She taught at EWU and at Spokane Falls Community College. For 25 years, Mickey taught classes in Accounting, Statistics, Personal Finance, Management, Women in Business, and International Business. She was honored as Outstanding Young Woman of America, Who's Who in the West, and co-founded Action Women's Exchange, a professional women's organization, with her sister, Molly, and two others in the late 1970s. She was highly involved as Chapter and State Advisor with Delta Epsilon Chi, a business marketing leadership student organization. Through this involvement she also began to explore travel opportunities for her students. During her years at SFCC, Mickey left a legacy that included co-founding Discover the World Tours. Along with her dear colleague and close friend, Mary Ann Sanger, they took hundreds of students, faculty, friends and family on study trips to New York, London, Rome, Athens, Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. She also taught International Business in the Study Abroad program in London. She circumnavigated the world in 1997, and her interests were many and varied-operas, art, classical music, trying new foods, and shopping, shopping. She was also involved with a Bridge group, a Bible Study Group, and as a Eucharist Minister at Assumption Parish. Her daughters and grandchildren were the light of her life. Her positive, feisty, and loving spirit will be missed by all. She is survived by her children Dede Haight (Eric) Oman of Bellingham; Libbie Haight (Jeff) Armstrong of Dahlonega, GA; sister Molly McCormick (Gordie) Blume of Issaquah; brothers Corky McCormick of Lexington, KY; and Jim (Sherrie) McCormick of Spokane; as well as five grandchildren Jessica, Emily, Katie, and Jamie Oman, and Rylan Armstrong, nieces and nephews, and many friends. The family wishes to thank the many friends who have helped Mickey over the years at home and abroad. A Rosary Vigil Service will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. and the Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 21 at 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home, where we will celebrate Mickey's life and share memories. Libbie & family,
So sorry to read of your mother's passing. I unfortunately can relate, my mom passed away this past July. (Both were too young). Many prayers for you & your family. May your memories keep you smiling. Take care!

Dear Mickey,
I'm addressing this to you personally because I want you to know how much I loved traveling with you and being your colleague at school.

There were lots of trips that you-all went on that I would have liked to participate in, but the time or money (especially money) didn't quite work out. However, I shall be forever grateful that I went with you on this last trip to Panama. You were so generous to share your wonderfully large stateroom with me. We had such a good time taking naps, laughing, eating and, of course, shopping, as well as looking and absorbing as much as possible on the shore excursions.

I also remember you from SFCC days, when we both served on the ever-demanding Curriculum Committee among others and enjoyed each other's support.

I trust that you and Mary Ann are already planning trips "over there," ready to give us all the best quality experience imaginable.

Love you always,
Nelliemay Hellenberg

To Mickey's family,
I'm sure you know that your mother was a remarkable woman and a life force to be reckoned with! What a legacy of rich experiences she has left you in your remembrances.

Mickey's Family: In love and admiration I write to let you know what an influence Mickey was in my life. Unfortunately I hadn't told her this recently - but she'll know now! I was very lucky to acompany her and Mary Anne to Europe in the summer of 91. If it weren't for Mickey I would have never gone. She told me I could make it happened, then she coached me. I learned from this to dream, to do, to dedicate oneself, to be determined then to share all of these things with the people around you. She was honest with me - real life honest something not everyone is willing to give, she could be stubborn, she mentored me like no other and she had faith in me. I thought I was special, but she treated everyone this way. I adore these things about her. She was the first, and only, person I have met who could be ready to leave the country in 10 minutes. I told my husband if she were a suitcase she'd be telling me to pack her and hit the road. I am the student that tried to match her feistiness and turned her world upside down when she took a group to Asia during Spring Break... '91, she was suprised to tears when she returned, I cleaned her office (to the point where you could see the floor). She told me "I'm not crying because I'm happy - because now I don't know what to do" she couldn't find anything! I think about her often and will continue to do so as her spirit is not one easily forgotten. She made me a better person and I cherish every moment spent with her. Here's to you Mickey ~ may you have many adventures in your everlasting life. Love, Angela Emry Sanders~Student Spokane Falls Community College.

To Mickey's Family:
It's still so hard for me to realize two of my very best friends are no longer with us. I loved your mom so very much. She was a mentor, confidant, travel buddy, colleague, and so much more. Some of my happiest memories are of her, Mary Ann, Erna, and me traveling the country and the world. Mickey created so many opportunites for living life fully. I know she and Mary Ann are in heaven planning all kinds of activities. Knowing that Mickey is free from all the pain and suffering she's gone through is what keeps those of us "left behind" able to continue on with joy and love in our hearts for a person we loved so much. I'll cherish my memories of Mickey forever.

Dede and Libbie----if I can ever do anything for you, please let me know. God bless you and your families. You are in my prayers.

Much Love,

Carol Millard
