Jack Golly, Fred Kissling, Sam Porfirio, Ben Carlton--The WGN Starnoters
January 1, 2016
Jack is the person who introduced me to British Light music when he was at WGN in Chicago. I asked him if he would let me watch them tape a show for Mutual, he let me come upstairs, and they recorded Robert Farnon's "Three Impressions for Orchestra." This was 1953. In 1993, I became a member of the Robert Farnon Society. I always remember Jack getting out of the taxi cab in front of the Tribune Tower with all his instruments hanging around his neck.

My father Jack Sparrowhawk (1930-1979)played with Mr. Golly on holidays like New Year's Eve, in the Tampa Bay Area(when I was a young child).
He thoroughly enjoyed these special times. Best Wishes, and thanks for allowing my father to play on the side, while raising a family. Being able to play on the side gave him much joy! Here's to a special meeting of two brilliant musicians in Heaven!

Thanks Jack for introducing me to the amazing Spike Jones...got to meet Doodles Weaver one time outside of Jack's office. He let us use alot of his recording equipment to pretend we were on the radio...a real nut. Hadn't seen the guy in 40 years...nice to know he made so many people happy.

I will always appreciate how nice and witty Jack was to me (Michelle's little sister). He could always put a smile on my face. I know that's how he would like to be remembered. Take care and know that he is more comfortable now, where ever he may be!

Dear Laura,
We were so sad to hear about the passing of Jack. He was the kind of guy you knew would always be around making everybody laugh. I will never forget Jack and his band playing for the Cincinnai Reds baseball fans that we brought to Tampa every year. He played for all of our parties and everybody loved him! He was wonderful to our whole family. Those memories will always stay with me. May God bless you and your whole family.

We would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the Golly family. We will miss Jack's wit and humor and the many times that we visited with him during meals and after golf games. It was especially interesting to talk about the wonderful days spent in North Carolina in the summer.

Laura and family,
My heartfelt prayers are with you in this time of loss. My ex-husband, Larry, played with Jack over the past 40 years, and I know he would want to send his condolences,as well as I do. He is living in Georgia now. Jack was his friend and one of his prime links to the entertainment industry here in Tampa. Jack filled the Tampa Bay area with music and laughter on many weekends over those years. May his memory be a candle to many young musicians.

Laura and family - my sister Kathy and I send our deepest sympathy. Our lives were touched by Jack at an early age when our Dad, Larry Whitney "Big Jazz" moved our family from Chicago to Winter Haven and then to Tampa to play with Jack and the band. I remember one time when I was about 8 yrs. old, Jack let me come on the stage while my Dad played trumpet! I have never forgotten the "rubber chicken" bit. It was so Jack - he always made us laugh.

Laura,
Naturally, like everyone else, we will miss Jack, his music, his being part of our lives all these years, but, MAINLY, we will never forget the kindness you both showed to us during a very difficult time in our lives. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jack's music brought happiness to so many, his jokes brought laughter. His friendship we treasure. His memory will always linger on in our lives. We, too, will miss, Jack, our dear friend and Jerry's musical mentor. Will never forget the day my secretary said "Lawrence Welk is on the phone," "I'll call back," she ordered me to take the call but of course I knew it was Jack Golly! Farewell conductor, thanks for letting us be part of your life.

Though I have not see Uncle Jack in years I remember how nicely he treated our family. Loved his sense of humor and thanks for that old dobro, though I did not know what the heck it was. He and Aunt Laura always seemed to be there for Granny Soissa and my mom. My best wishes for his family.

After 15 years of playing with Jack and his bands, I have a lots of memories of the music, good times and Jack's unique sense of humor. My kids still remember the rubber chicken and fried eggs that got served (tossed) around the kitchen table at the cabin in N.C. Thanks for the memories and we will remember you and your family.

Laura, Liza and Ed,
Thanks for sharing Jack with us for so many years. Playing drums and singing on his band for almost 12 years created many great memories for me. Carolyn remembers how kind and generous Jack was when we were struggling newlyweds. May you find peace in the many memories you each have of Jack.

I want to express my condolences to Ed and the family. I met Jack when I worked in his building on Westshore.I loved his corny jokes and I will prize the 2 pieces of his wood working that he gave me. We had our discussions of music, too.

A sad day for me indeed. Jack & I played music together for over 30 years. He was a mentor, friend, and in many ways like a father to me. I will greatly miss the fun we had playing music, and especially miss the laughs we had together. Rest in peace, Admiral.

Wine, woman (as in Laura) and song...and always an old tired joke that still made me laugh. That is "the Boss" I will always remember. You were a wonderful grandpa to Foxy and Sadie, allowing them to share your couch space. The cruise through the Panama Canal will go down as one of the most fun 10 days I had in my life - at least what I recall of it from the pictures. There was a lot of wine drinking at sea! And those trips to "the shack" where we never missed happy hour at 5 p.m. ON THE DOT will always be in my heart. Thanks for the memories. May your urn continue to travel far and wide!

Jack Golly was a fixture in combo dancing music. He always stopped what he was playing and broke into "It Was Fascination" when my "second time around" newlywed parents, Nell and Bill Hippenmeier, came in the room. He was special to so many many people; but I will never forget him for that. And of course for playing at my wedding!

My condolences go out to Jack's family and many friends. He was a true artist and left behind an exemplary example for other aspiring musicians to follow. Most of all, I have been fortunate to have been among his cohorts. Jim Crosby
