The heavenly choir just welcomed a fantastic tenor as Robert J. Bromfield, 90, a lifelong resident of Stamford, Connecticut passed away peacefully on March 4, 2018 in Greenville, South Carolina. His loving wife of 68 years, Elsie, was at his side since the two met in high school right through their recent move to Greenville. Bob is survived by his wife Elsie (Olsen), daughter Janet Driscoll (Daniel) of Simpsonville, SC, two sons, Chris of Boca Raton, FL and Roy (Kimberly) of Irvine, CA. He was predeceased by his eldest son Russell and by all his brothers and sisters. Known as Pop Pop by his grandchildren, he was blessed with seven (Mark, Laura, Heather, Rachael, Jennifer, Sam and Miriam) and five great grandchildren.
Born in the home on Courtland Avenue in Glenbrook, Connecticut in 1927, Bob grew up during the Great Depression, graduated from Stamford High School and served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during WWII. After the war he married his sweetheart Elsie and they raised their family in Stamford. Initially, Bob worked for his father's civil engineering firm. Later, he transitioned to work for 45 years in the banking industry during which he graduated from the American Bankers Association and rose to Sr. Vice President in the Trust division of Union Trust (now Wells Fargo). His lifelong passion was music, singing in a barbershop quartet accompanied on piano by his father Llewellyn, in the Stamford HS Acapella Choir and upon his return from military service, as a founding member of the Troupers (a Gilbert and Sullivan light opera troupe). Most notably, Bob was the tenor soloist at the Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, CT, where he sang in the choir for more than seventy years. He also served the church as a Deacon, an Elder and as a committee member for special projects. Throughout his life, Bob was active in the community where he helped found the Northrop Little League, assisted with the Boy Scouts and served for many years on the boards of the Woodlawn Cemetery, Visiting Nurse Association and Stamford Senior Services (now Silver Source). A longtime member of the Woodway Country Club, Bob was an avid tennis player (playing into his mid-eighties), a golfer who only remembered his good shots and a fixture at Sunday brunch. Bob led a good and full life on this earth and is now in the loving hands of God.
