Martin Rodriguez Obituary

Martin Matthew Rodriguez Martin Matthew Rodriguez, beloved husband, father, son, grandson, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend, made a peaceful transition early on the afternoon of Saturday, February 19, 2011 after a sudden battle with cancer. Matthew was most adored for his humor, sense of self, adventurous spirit, and honest originality. Whether surfing the beaches of California, camping with his family and friends to their favorite destinations, kayaking and mountain biking where most would not dare, strumming one of his many guitars to his favorite Bob Marley tunes, playing the sport of Frisbee golf whom his brother introduced him to, or grilling for family and friends, Matthew was at home in this world and made many friends in it. Matthew was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on January 1, 1966. He attended and in 1986 graduated from B.F. Terry High School in Rosenberg, Texas, where he enjoyed art and music. He attended Wharton County Junior College for a year. He later joined the Navy where he proudly served our country being based out of Camp Pendleton and served duties in Desert Storm as part of the Iraqi War. While in the Navy he met his loving wife Marlese and they married in 1991. They completed their loving family with the addition of their daughter Zoe in 1993. Later they settled in Round Rock, Texas in 1995. Soon after arriving in the Austin area Matthew began working for the University of Texas. Matthew has been employed for 15 years at UT building the trust and love of many co-workers whom became some of his dearest friends. Matthew is survived by his Wife Marlese Alles Rodriguez and daughter Zoe Rodriguez of Round Rock, TX; parents, Martin and Lydia Rodriguez of Richmond, TX; grandmother Christina Rodriguez of Rosenberg, TX; siblings, Kimberly Rodriguez of Houston, TX, Mark Rodriguez of Houston, TX, Marly Rodriguez Diaz and husband Russell of Wharton, TX; nieces Carissa Diaz and Jordan Diaz; and nephews Christopher Diaz and Xavier Diaz; along with beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout Texas and beyond. A Celebration of Life will be held in Austin, Texas during March 2011 (date TBD and all concerned will be advised of date). In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Lighthouse Hospice-Altenheim in Round Rock, TX or another non-profit organization in Matthew's name.

Oh Matt… what can I say, you were always fun to be around, the life of the room, musically talented, a great “bean man” drawer. You were a fantastic husband, father and friend.

I will never forget the incredible turkey dinner that you cooked the first year that you guys moved to Round Rock… we all took bets on how dry it would be but it was the best turkey I have ever had!

I will also never forget swimming at Imperial Beach when you and Marlese were dating and our trip to Tijuana , I knew instantly that you were family!

I will miss you more than you know, I am certain that you will be watching over my sister and Zoe.

Matt was such a funloving person, who welcomed everyone with open arms. I will never forget our "crawfish boil", we had in the middle of the Rodriquez living room floor, on one of my visits! My husband, Bill's fondest memory of Matt, is watching, and listening to him strum Jane's Addiction, on his guitar, in the garage! We love you Matt!

You were my cousin and I truly miss you. You were fearless and you enjoyed life to its fullest. I wish your daughter and wife to be strong and well—as in your marriage vows you swear to stay together in sickness and in health, through good times and bad. And no two people I have ever met have ever stayed truer to an oath. When you joined the Navy you awaited your deployment, with uniform and boots on you helped with your efforts in the Iraqi war. It simply hadn’t occurred to you that you should do otherwise in your life.

That’s the cousin I will always strive to remember and it is the father, brother, and son I pray my family remembers, because he loved Marlese and Zoe to no end. Perhaps that’s because they share the same fearlessness or perhaps simply because he was, always, obsessed with his family. I am so grateful for your dear friend Cheryl , to whom everyone should be grateful for her help during the past few weeks.

I won’t lie. I’m furious with my cousin for leaving before his best days could be realized and before we could re-forge the closeness of our childhood of being cousins. I’ve cried much the last few weeks, I feel like I’ve drained a hole in my soul. But now I’m afraid to stop for fear I’ll forget how EVERYONE loved him so terribly much.

“Three little Birds” in memory of you,

Your CUZ!
