Dorothy Smith Obituary

Dorothy Marie Smith Dorothy Marie Smith was born the 22nd of February 1929 to parents, Eugene Beatty Davis and Dorothy Lee Turner. She died on the 24th of October 2011. She was born at the old Seton Hospital and spent the rest of her life living in north Austin. She was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Marie devoted her life to children, her own and many more who found a safe and welcome place in her home. Her door was always open to anyone in need and she loved hosting gatherings for family and friends. Being a mother was all she ever wanted to be and she excelled at it. She was a positive role model to her own children and all others that were fortunate to experience her love. To hold a child in her arms always made her happy. As matriarch of a very large extended family, she was frequently called upon for advice and readily gave wise counsel. Marie's passion has been passed on to her children. She will be greatly missed but her legacy will live on. She is survived by her son, Robert Green, and his wife Tyree; three daughters, Karen Tweedy and her husband Steve, Carol June Green and Cynthia Marie Ivy; three brothers, James Davis and his wife Betty, Bobby Davis and his wife Fay, and Ronald Davis and his wife Carol; eight grandchildren, Lori Smith, Nancy Gresak, Jessica Green, Brian, Craig and Ross Tweedy, Brenton Christian, Katelynn Ivy, Mica and Cade Stevens; and ten great-grandchildren, Skylar, Parker, Presley, Rhyan, Charlie, Sidney, Jonah, Chloe, Mikayla, and Bryce. Graveside services will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning, Wednesday, the 26th of October at Austin Memorial Park. Tributes may be made at www.cookwaldenfuneralhome. com

Mrs. Smith was an incredible, good, truly kind-spirited lady. I had the honor of knowing her for a few years, and I have always held her in the very highest regard. We're much poorer for her passing, but infinitely richer for having known her.

I have so many fond memories of being at Marie's house. From staying the night with Cynthia to enjoying the wonderful meals she made for us (still love her goulash). We had so many special times and she was so good to all "the girls." My thoughts and prayers go out to Bobby, Karen, Carol June, Cynthia and their families.

I am proud to say I was another of her "other children". She opened her home to me without hesitation. There was always a warm place to stay and a warm meal at the Smith house, and Marie was at the center. I love you, Mrs Smith. When they made you they broke the mold. I am sure wherever you are now, you are laughing and making everyone feel they are home.

Marie was such a wonderful help with the St. Mary's Academy Alumnae Association for many years. No matter how busy she was, she would always spend time planning and helping with reunion lunches and visiting with members. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
My deepest condolences to the family.

I spent many summer days as a teenager at Aunt Marie's pool with her niece and my best friend Denise. I always felt like part of the family. It was a pleasure knowing Marie.

For 37 years, Marie’s home was my home away from home. She was selfless, loving and one of the most special people I will ever know. She meant the world to me. My heart goes out to each of her family members. I love you all. I’m deeply saddened that we have lost her. She will be in my heart forever.

Marie was a force of nature! She was a strong and loving woman, and I remember her and her mother as being very fine cooks. When I was a young bride, they taught me to cook.....and shared the fun of cooking with me. I will always remember helping to prepare daily lunches for the work crews, in the Davis kitchen.
My sympathy and condolences go to all of Marie's family of friends and loving relatives.

I remember going to Marie's house often when I was a young child with my Grandmother. I always loved to see her and the rest of the family that she always had over. She was always full of joy and she always welcomed me with open arms. I remember how happy she was every year on Christmas to see all of the children at her house. I'm so glad I knew such a wonderful woman, and I hope that one day I can be as loving as she was.

I had the priveledge of being "one of the other children" who came through her door all the time with her grand-daughter Nancy. We spent many a summer day over at her pool and long, lazy hot afternoons reading one of her books out of her library on one of her many comfy couches! It was such a warm, cozy inviting house and Grandmother was always the perfect hostess; someone who made the MOST AMAZING meat loaf and beef dishes without ever having eaten meat, was always willing and happy to hear my latest sob-story about a lost boyfriend and most importantly, gave us all advice in that witty, sarcastic "do what you gotta do" take on life that we all grew to love. She was a lovely woman and my "grandmother" away from my grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

Lori and I have been friends since she moved north. For many years I listened to her fond stories of home and how special holidays were at Grandmothers house. I kept threatening to go home with her. This past weekend I was able to meet many of you but not Grandmother. Even though I never met her, the warmth she had for all of you lives in my memory. You were fortunate to have her in your lives.

I would like to send my condolences and deepest sympathy to the entire family.

Warmest Regards,

As one of the many kids that found a home at Marie's house, my love and condolences to the family. I'm glad I had the opportunity to thank her personally for being my "second" mother and making me feel special in her home. She was a wonderful woman and I have great memories growing up around her. Wishing my hair would flip as perfectly as Karen, wishing my mom stayed at home like Carol June's did. Thank you Marie!
