Joel CROMLEIGH Obituary

CROMLEIGH, Joel Allen
"Showboat Joe"
Joel Allen "Showboat", 82, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015. Showboat was born on May 3, 1933 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to George H. and Janet C. Cromleigh. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 and attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1959 to 1961. Also during the 1960s and into the 1970s he managed the Varsity Theater on Guadalupe across from the campus of his dearly beloved Longhorns. A veteran professional pool player, Showboat toured the pro billiards circuit from Vegas to Atlantic City back in the 1970s with legends such as Minnesota Fats, Willie Mosconi and U.J. Puckett. Remembered for his compassionate nature, Showboat was always there for any friend in need even if it was just to crack a joke to see you smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Georgene Elizabeth James of Oak Creek, WI and son Timothy Allen Cromleigh of Mineral Wells, TX. He is survived by daughter Cheryl Ann Cromleigh of Bowie, TX, son Jason Cromleigh and wife, Erin and granddaughter, Kaelyn of Dripping Springs, TX.

Memorial services to be held at a later date in Austin, Texas.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Park Bend Health Center in Austin for their utmost kindness and care of Showboat over the past several years and in his final days.

I worked for Joel Cromleigh as an usher in 1963 and 1964 while I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB. Then again as his Assistant Manager from 1965-1969 at the Varsity, while I was attending the University of Texas. This was during the roadshow days of "My Fair Lady" and "Sound of Music", when movies would run for a year or more.
Joel taught me a lot about the theatre business which helped me tremendously when I went on the manage theatres for Santikos in San Antonio. Sadly, my last contact with Joel was during one of his pool tours in the early 1980s.
Rest in Peace, Joel

I worked with Joe at the Varsity for several years while attending UT. Joe was always friendly and fun to be around. We lost touch over the years. I looked Joe up when I returned to Austin many years later. He seemed down on his luck and a bit sad. Hope it got better for him.

Sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Joe used to emcee shows at our night clubs, the Hook'em and Body Shop back in the 70's. He was a super guy and a real friend to all. I remember going to the midnight movies at the old varsity and Joe helping us improve our billiard skills. Rest in peace old friend.
