Marvin Henderson Obituary

Marvin D. Henderson Marvin D. Henderson, age 91, a lifelong resident of Georgetown, Texas, soared into the wild blue yonder on Saturday, April 21, 2012. He was born on November 15, 1920 to Earl Ernest and Ethel (Dawson) Henderson in Georgetown. Marvin married the love of his life Ouida Waddell on March 21, 1947 in Hempstead, Texas. Marvin was a graduate of Georgetown High School and earned a BS degree from Southwestern University where he was in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and won many honors playing on the Southwestern Tennis Team. Marvin continued his love for tennis by competing in many Texas Tournaments and was #1 in Texas for over 20 years. He competed in the Nationals from 1980-2011 and won 20 National Tournaments in his age division. He was a National Champion in singles and doubles with 20 first place Gold Balls. Marvin was the first and only tennis player inducted into the Southwestern Hall Of Fame. The Southwestern University Tennis Courts are dedicated to him. Marvin served our country as a Commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He flew as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific and a dive bomber during the Korean War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Korean Medal Of Honor. Marvin served a total of 28 years in the Navy including the Reserves. During his years providing for his family in Georgetown, Marvin was self-employed as a Texaco Wholesale Distributor for 25 years. In 1985, he retired and continued to devote his time to his community, friends and family. Marvin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown where he served as a deacon, youth fellowship leader, treasurer, and superintendent of Sunday School. He also was a member of the VFW, President of the Lions Club, American Legion, Boy Scouts, Cub Master, and a member of the School Board, always promoting commitment to community and service. Survivors include his wife of 65 years Ouida Henderson of Georgetown; daughter, Joyce Henderson Kain and husband Robin of Denton, TX.; son, Marvin Henderson, Jr. of Austin; grandsons, Trey Kain and wife Jill of Del Rio, Dawson Henderson III of Austin, Doak Henderson of Austin; granddaughters, Courtney Berlakovich and husband Brian of Las Vegas, Dianna Boorman and husband Ben of Georgetown; great grandchildren, T.J. and Vivian Kain of Del Rio, Byron Berlakovich of Las Vegas, and Davis Boorman of Georgetown. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Earl Henderson, Jr.; and sisters, Ethel Louise Harral, Mary Kilpatrick, and Dorothy Jean Rogers. Serving as pallbearers are Lou Brown, Bob Jones, Cliff Snyder, Tim Taylor, Fred Hilgeman, and Dr. James Shepherd. Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Sloan, Charles Gordon, Larry Elliff, Reggie Smith, Joe Montgomery, and James Daniels. A visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 23 at Ramsey Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 at the First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown. Memorials may be made in Marvin's honor to the First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown or Southwestern University in Georgetown.
