Before retiring permanently in Spring Lake, N.J., Joe enjoyed a third career as chief lifeguard on the beach in Spring Lake and Belmar, N.J.
After their relocation to Florida, Joe earned the senior world title holder award in power lifting, and in 2011 was honored by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office for outstanding service to his community.

Whenever I was training or racing and there was a temptation to give up. I would say to myself what would Joe Berard or John O'Regan do? Then I would push on to the finish. Joe was a great guy.

Tina and family,
My heart is with you during this time and I'm so sorry for your loss.
Joe was the most positive, encouraging and uplifting person I've known. Just being in his presence, you couldn't help but be in awe of his energy and I'm a better person for having known Joe.
