Marie invited me to become a Polymer Ambassador and opened up a whole new world for me. She was not just a lecturer but a outstanding demonstrator who believed that the way to a student's heart was to actually allow student to get his hands wet and let him run with the ball.

Mrs. Sherman is one of the reasons I became a teacher. I will always remember my time with her in science independent study. She will live on in all the lives she touched, including mine. Thank you Mrs. Sherman.

Marie was an active in bringing chemistry programs to area classrooms on behalf of the American Chemical Society. Because of this, an obit is being prepared for publication in Chemical and Engineering News, the weekly magazine of the 160,000 member scientific society.

Even though it has been over 40 years, I will always remember Mrs. Sherman as being such a kind person and teacher. I will always remember that I was in her class when they came and got me and told me my my mother had died and Mrs. Sherman was so sweet.

To the family and friends of Marie Sherman, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I knew Marie through my late mother, Pat Essen, who was one of the other Monsanto girls (Mary Luke, Peggy Kramer, Grace Weiss, and Dee Dee James) with whom Marie maintained a friendship lasting over 60 years. Here is the story of how Marie influenced my life and, through my renewable energy educational activities, thousands of other lives.
When I started making biodiesel in my garage back in 2004, my parents were concerned for my safety. After all, as a theatre major I had only taken the minimal science requirements, and had never studied chemical or mechanical engineering. So they invited Marie and another chemist friend to a demonstration of my biodiesel equipment and process.
Marie was thrilled to see my home scale biodiesel processing plant, which to this day allows me to transesterify triglycerides into fatty acid methyl esters in 30 gallon batches that meet ASTM standards! Marie assured my parents that my process was safe and responsible, providing encouragement and a burette that I treasure even more now that she has left us.
As a result of Marie's endorsement, I have fueled my personal vehicles exclusively with my own home made biodiesel since 2005. This has saved me thousands of dollars and the environment from many pounds of carbon emissions. By following Marie's example as an educator, I have taught hundreds of people how to practice this fuel-making hobby safely and responsibly. Via local events such as Earth Day and the Green Homes Festival, thousands of people have learned the environmental impacts related to the production and use of biodiesel and ethanol.
Marie helped give me the confidence to pursue my fuel-making hobby and share my knowledge with others. And so I dedicate my continued efforts in this area to the great science educator Marie Sherman and to my parents, Pat and Don Essen, who taught me to give back to the community.

Marie mentored me as well as most of the chemistry and research teachers in this area. There will be a hole in science education that will take many people to fill because no one person will be able to do all that Marie accomplished. She will be missed because she was a gracious and nice person as well as a great teacher. Joan Twillman

I always remember when I met grandma Marie, during thankgivings of 1983 as an exchange student from Chile, with a wide smile, very nice and patient. She treated me so well during my stay in her house by then and her present "a floating penny". I'm sure she will be missed by her family and friends. Good people are always remembered.
My deepest condolences and love to her entire family.

Marie was a strong positive spirit to all in the teaching profession with a deep faith in the next generation of scholars. She certainly was one of a kind when it came to nurturing students in the sciences. Few of us have anywhere near the energy, expertise and mentoring skill that she shared with her students. She was a role model for us all. She leaves a tremendous void in the enhancement of science education nationally as well as here in St. Louis. I am sure she will be counting on her students to step in and take up the challenge of educating our future scientists and teachers.
Let's not let her down.

Marie was instrumental in influencing me to have students participate in JMAS, JHSES and ISEF. She was such an inspiration. I participated with students for 20 years because of Marie. Her legacy for me is in how she helped new teachers reach students and place them on a scientific path. She will never know how many students beyond her own that she touched because she influenced their teachers. She will be fondly remembered.

I loved my aunt. Just being around her was inspirational. I always admired her intellect.
My fondest memory of her was the day of my first marriage. I attended a bachelor party the night before and apparently had alcohol poisoning (I had gone way over the top). I was so sick I had to have my dad and Marie (who had just flown in to town) come to the doctor's office to pick me up because I was too sick to drive. Marie laughed the whole time as my dad laid me in the back seat and drove home. But she never chastised me and just encouraged me. She was that type of person, always fun to be around. I'm going to miss her deeply!

Mrs. Sherman was the most influential person in my life. She supported my love of science, made chemistry understandable, and suggested I attend Creighton University School of Nursing to fulfill my dream of being a nurse. I've never forgotten the day I got to stay after school for an involved lab where I extracted DNA from a bovine spleen. She made science amazing. I feel so very blessed to have had Mrs. Sherman as a teacher and mentor. May she rest in peace. She certainly made the world a better place with a life well lived.

Mrs. Sherman was the greatest. I studied chemistry because she showed me it was much cooler than law. I thank her for all the time she spent with the independent study projects and all the time she spent with us individually, shaping us into the women we are today. I still remember cleaning out the old lab and the excitement on her face when we finally moved into the new chemistry lab. Ursuline has lost a wonderful teacher, but Mrs. Sherman's legacy will live on!

Marie developed a wonderful educational volunteer program called "Chemistry is pHun" sponsored in part by the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society. She handed over the program to me a number of years ago and I enjoyed working with her in the seamless transfer. I continue to educate with this program and she is well remembered by the teachers that she volunteered for. She will be fondly remembered by me and many in the local ACS section.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Sherman touched the lives of all the students that she taught through the years at Ursuline. She definitely made me love chemistry and was able to pull out my interest in science when I thought there wasn't one. I was fortunate to run into her last year at our 25th highschool reunion and I am so glad I was able to hug her and tell her how much I appreciated the education that she provided for all of us! She will be missed!

What a loss for Ursuline. I graduated 35 years ago and still think of Mrs. Sherman when I make my holiday peanut brittle from the mimeographed copy of a 'science' experiment we did in lab the week before Christmas in her biochemistry class with all the scientific names of the ingredients.
