Stephen Michael "Mike" Murray obituary

Stephen Murray Obituary

Murray, Stephen Michael Mike Fortified with the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church: Dearest husband of nearly 25 years to Barbara J. Murray, beloved son of the late Marjorie Ellen Pequignot Murray and the late John Joseph Murray. Dear brother to John Joseph (Jack) Murray of Austin, TX; Daniel Charles (Dan) Murray of Chicago, IL; Patricia Ellen (Patti) Murray Decio of Dallas, TX; the late Gerald William (Gerry) Murray, and the late Carol Anne Murray Rehtmeyer. Favorite uncle of Monica, Sean, Cara, Robbie, Will, Patrick, Michaela, Tyler, Brian, Joshua, Benjamin, Murray Decio, Jessica, and Jason. Mike ascended to eternal life on February 24th, 2016, while surrounded by family. We thank specially the team of angels at Siteman Cancer Center and BJC Hospice Care who cared for Mike during his final days. Mike was born April 6, 1939, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the eldest of six children, to Marjorie Ellen Pequignot and John Joseph Murray. He attended school at St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge, Illinois; St. George High School, Evanston, Illinois, and the University of Notre Dame, 19611964. He received a MBA from Washington University in 1975. He began a career in business with Warnaco Sportswear in Puerto Rico, and was later employed by General Foods International. Mike subsequently joined the StewartWarner Corporation, where he remained for sixteen years, until retiring in 1991. Mike served in the Peace Corps in Colombia, South America from 1961 to 1963, in Washington, D.C. from 1963 to 1965 and in Per, South America from 1965 to 1967. He was a founding board member of Forest Park Forever, a first member and past Chairman of the Forest Park Advisory Committee, as well as a first member and past President of the Great Rivers Greenway District. The great loves of Mike's life were his wonderful family and friends; distance running (50 mile Masters National Champion and founding member of the 6:20 Club), and cycling (three-time Masters National Road Race Champion and Regional Director for the United States Cycling Federation). He will be remembered for his dauntless advocacy on behalf of all cyclists and pedestrians, his enduring love for Forest Park and the City of Saint Louis (the 17th and 28th Wards in particular!), and his heartfelt affection for the Island of Puerto Rico and its people. All Mike's many interests were infused with his seemingly boundless, optimistic energy. Services: There will be a Celebration of Mike's Life Sunday, February 28th, in the Trolley Room at the Dennis and Judith Jones Visitor and Education Center from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 5595 Grand Drive in Forest Park. Visitation prior to the funeral service will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 29th, 2016 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis at the corner of Lindell Blvd. and North Newstead Ave. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery will be private. Mike, it's hard to believe that it's almost six years since you left us, compañero.
I miss you just as much as did when I first left a condolence message February 26, 2016.
Barbara, you continue in my thoughts, my heart, and my prayers.

When I think of Mike, I want to plant a tree, ride a bicycle or walk rather than drive to a destination, or simply pick up dropped or discarded things that distract from the beauty and appearance of our public places. His love of the planet and his passion to protect it continue to inspire me.

I recently learned of Mike's death in email from Peter Kapp. Peter and I were Peace Corps Volunteers (1962-64) in the village of Sandona Narino Colombia. We worked together in "community develpment" and shared the same experience of village life with wonderful people, riding our horses to homes and small farms in the region and actively supporting "Accion Comunal" - Colombia's program for organizing villagers for self-help projects. We organized several groups to build schools, make their own bricks, to dig and entrench aqueducts for piped water, to establish gardens and to downplay the fighting between Liberals and Conservative that resulted in bloodshed between rivals. We grew to learn from our village friends and organizations and we left the Peace Corps with aspirations to support humanity and civility by organizing at the local level. I became a Professor and Mike a businessman and Peter a combination of our interests. We stayed in touch as friends.
To all who knew Mike, we know you were special to him. To his family and Barbara, long live the memory of Mike.

Oh, my heavens! I was in the process of looking up his phone #, because I had a question about bicycle paths in St. Louis, and he always was in-the-know. I moved to Massachusetts last year, so hadn't heard the news. Mike was one of those very kind (& knowledgeable) people that you assumed (hoped?) would be in this world forever (or at least as long as I would be). I am so sad to learn of his passing, and send condolences to Barbara, all his family and friends.

Barb: I recently learned that Mike passed away. I am so sorry. No one can know another person's feelings at this kind of loss but having lost Laurie fairly recently, I know you will get through this and knowing you, with much grace. You were wonderful to reach out to me when that happened and I am thinking of you now. It was always delightful to see Mike at my CityArchRiver meetings that last few years. He was obviously well regarded and appreciated. He leaves a wonderful legacy.

I was fortunate to meet Mike through my friend Bryce Caster while we were both students attending Washington University, and despite an age difference of 50 years, it was very clear how special of a person he was. As I grow older, I hope I can stay as young as Mike.

I met Mike at the Home Plate luncheon at the Harbison House at the end of my freshman year of college. My host family did not show up and after talking to Mike for quite some time, he adopted me. Ever since then, we went on various adventures and lunches where we discussed our love of cycling, St. Louis, and adventure.
In the summer of 2013 before my senior year in college, we road tripped together from Los Angeles to St. Louis via Oregon, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Despite being at the ripe age of 74, Mike camped with me and he even climbed the 10,566 ft tall Avalanche Peak in Yellowstone. My favorite moment from that trip was in Idaho. Mike was driving like a madman and decided to pass two trucks and two cars along a curve on the two-lane US 20. It turned out that one of those cars was a cop car and it took him about 10 minutes to catch up to us. Somehow, Mike was able to convince the officer to let us go without a ticket or warning of any kind. I will never forget that moment.
Mike, you are one of a kind and I know you will always be there as my guiding star. If there's a bike race in heaven, I'm putting my money on you to win it.

Mike and Barbara were like a second set of parents to our son, Bryce, while he was and undergraduate at Wash U. We will always be grateful for that as well as the special bond he and Bryce had for adventure. Not many adults Mike's age would have signed on for a road trip with a college kid that included camping. Mike did, and by all accounts, they had a great time! He was a terrific, kind and thoughtful man and our hearts go out to Barbara and family. He will be missed by the entire Caster family, but especially Bryce.

Mike's passion for bicycle and pedestrian safety, planning, and engineering will endure for a very long time, championed by those, like me, whom he mentored directly. I am fortunate to have been influenced by Mike, as a professional and as a human being.

Mike was a member of the first Peace Corps group ever, and a key part of the team of people who shaped it into a worldwide force for good. I met Mike when I first moved to St. Louis, just a few years after I returned. He was congenial, dedicated, empathic and realistic. We partnered on a local celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps, and it expressed those values that drew Mike to the Peace Corps as a young man. Over the years I found him to be a man who inspired young people to join and calmed the fears of their parents. He carried the banner for many of us in the area, and became the glue that connected over five years of returned volunteers. He was a wonderful human being who found friends and admirers drawn by his deeds, not his words. RIP Mike. My deepest sympathies, Barbara.

Mike was a precious asset to St. Louis, the Central West End, Forest Park, and the local bicyclist community, and he was always very supportive of me and my efforts to improve our little corner of the world. We need many more like Mike in our nation and world. I was proud to know him.

Mike was an amazingly dedicated returned Peace Corps volunteer and the leadership he provided our RPCV association has been so valuable over the years. I am lucky to have met him and been inspired by his advocacy on behalf of international service. He was also a great spokesman for the city of St. Louis and for urban, sustainable living. I send my condolences to his wife and family.

I just commented the other day that I hadn't seen Mike for awhile walking along Lindell picking up litter as he walked to the gym on Union. Now I know why. We didn't know each other well, but would meet up when help was needed cleaning up Taylor Park.

He will be missed by many. Please accept my condolences.

My sincerest condolences to Barbara and Mike's family and friends.
Mike was a stalwart member of the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers in Colombia, and I, along with his other compañeros from Colombia I, will miss him dearly.
He fulfilled all three of the Peace Corps goals,* and it can be truthfully said that his life made a difference.
Rest in Peace, hermano.
* The three goals:
To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women
To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans
