He married Edith Louise Kett in August 1947 and in 1950 he and Edith purchased a home and farm where they raised their six children. The farm was very successful and grew from 22 to more than 200 head of dairy cattle.
While living in Canajoharie, Ed was a member of the Montgomery County Soil Conservation Commission, as well as a councilman for the Town of Canajoharie. He was employed by various dairy cooperatives and was president of both the Canajoharie co-op and Northeast Dairy Cooperative (NEDCO) based in Syracuse, NY. While in Canajoharie, Ed was an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and presided over their first Parish Council. Upon his retirement, Ed moved to Lake Bomoseen in Vermont where he and Edith resided happily for four years. After losing Edith to cancer in 1990, Ed continued to live in Castleton for a number of years and volunteered at Rutland Hospital. In 1994 Ed married Susan Doran and they spent time in New Mexico and Florida. While in Florida, Ed volunteered for the New Smyrna Beach Court System as a court officer. In 2010, Ed moved first to Syracuse, NY and then to Connecticut.
Ed was predeceased by his loving wife, Edith, of 43 years.
He is survived by his children, Kathy (Skip) Potter of Warrensburg, NY, Ed (Edee) Sterling, MA, Larry (Karen) Wolcott, CT, Jim, Albany, NY, Maureen (Ed) Valovage of Memphis, NY and Peg (Mike) McPeck of Skaneateles, NY; a sister, Mary (Ken) Darrow Sprakers, NY; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Ed loved his family: he was funny, a great story teller, and Irish to the core. He loved watching collegiate sports, especially Syracuse, Florida and Connecticut; playing golf; walking by the ocean and spending time with his dogs, Nicki and Gracie. He will be missed by all who knew him.
On April 12, a funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven, VT. Ed will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fair Haven.
The family would especially like to thank the nurses and staff of the Pines at Bristol for their wonderful kindness and compassionate care.

I will remember Ed Mcnamara as being a very helpful and fine gentleman. Growing up in West Castleton, I often helped my father, Ed Doran, with carpentry projects at the Mcnamara's just down the road. I admit I was a terrible carpenter's apprentice and would often get side-tracked by reading the books and magazines that were located throughout their house. Ed and my sister Susan (Ed's second wife) graciously opened their house in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, to care for my ill mother, who required dialysis weekly. I remember seeing Ed dressed in his blue security outfit(volunteer at the court) looking very official, on my vacation years ago. Ed enjoyed serving the town of Castleton in the position of chair of the board of selectmen. Ed was a friendly conversationalist. Prayers and kind thoughts to his wonderful family.
