Guy Burnette Obituary

Guy E. "Sandy" Burnette

Guy E. (Sandy) Burnette died on November 8th after a five year battle with Corticobasil Degeneration. Sandy passed away at home attended by his wife of 42 years, Susan, his younger son Kevin, and with aid from Hospice. Kevin's selfless decision to return home allowed his father to remain in a safe and loving environment during the final two years of this terrible illness.

Sandy was the proud descendant of two Tampa founding families, the McKay's and Gutierrez's. His great-great-grandfather James McKay settled his family in Tampa in 1846. He helped develop the Port of Tampa, built the county's first permanent courthouse, and served as one of its first mayors. His grandfather, D.B. McKay, served as mayor for five terms and owned the Tampa Times newspaper. Sandy's mother Celestina McKay Burnette joined the Women's Army Corps, during W.WII, rising to the rank of Major, retiring when she married Air Force Colonel Guy E. Burnette, Sr.

Raised in Tampa, Sandy went to Jesuit High School before attending Vanderbilt University. After graduating in 1974, he enrolled at FSU's College of Law where he graduated in 1977. Sandy worked as an attorney for over 38 years, with a practice primarily dedicated to civil litigation, forensic fire consulting, and fire service/law enforcement training.

Sandy was a certified instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center/ATF National Academy, the Pat Thomas/Lively Law Enforcement Training Center, and the Florida Fire College. He delivered lectures at conferences and training academies throughout the world and devoted himself to numerous organizations dedicated to fighting arson and insurance fraud. Sandy was a Director of the IAAI where he served 35 years as a Legal Advisor to their Florida Chapter, was a past President of FACAP, and was a life member of both organizations. He also served as past Chair of the Property Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association.

His work earned him numerous accolades including the Award of Recognition from the Department of Justice and the Silver Hammer Award from the Vice President of the United States. Sandy was recognized as an AV Preeminent Attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest peer review rating in the legal profession.

Sandy will be remembered by his many friends for his taste for Arturo Fuente cigars, his unique and wonderful wit, and his love for his favorite football team, the Seminoles.

His wife and children extend thanks to all the close friends and family who have delivered boundless help and support during these difficult years. We especially thank a particular group who to Sandy defined the word friend: Hulon Williams, Julio Muniz, Bruce Ely, Ken Keebler, Jack Ward, Joe Toscano, Bill Lundy, Keith Pierce and Bill Watson. We also acknowledge with grateful hearts the truth that God's love does indeed provide a light through even the darkest days. Sandy is survived by his wife Susan, sons Kevin and George, George's wife Leslie, and Sandy's sister, Lura Burnette. A memorial service will be held in Tampa at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church on January 6, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that donations be made, in Sandy's name, to the Leon County Humane Society, located at 413 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee Florida 32312.

By far one of the best and stellar trial attorney I have had the honor to witness. As a fire investigator, I learned much from this stellar mentor, and his teachings with regard to arson and the rights of the fire investigator, have, indeed, saved me from trial rebuttal agony. Thank you Guy for your valued tutelage, sharing your case study knowledge, and helping me become a very careful and responsible fire investigator. I will miss your fish ties, your awesome humor, and your ability as a trial attorney. God Bless your journeys in His Great Kingdom and may God Bless your wife and family.

George Burnette

December 2, 2017

Yesterday the world lost a brilliant teacher and attorney, and I lost my hero and biggest supporter. I'm heartbroken, but I'm also very grateful for every moment I was able to spend with him, and for being able to tell him how much he means to me.

Speaking of heroes, they always seem to appear during tragedies, and my dad's illness was no exception. My mom and brother cared for my dad 24/7 with levels of patience and love that can only be described as superhuman. Also, my dad's closest friends kept in touch with him daily, and would frequently fly and drive long distances just to spend some time with him in person and give a little relief to my mom and brother. I hope those friends understand how much that meant to my dad, and how much it meant to me when I was thousands of miles away and feeling helpless.

I also have to say how thankful I am to have Leslie in my life. She has been there for me through plenty of emotional breakdowns and nightmares ever since my dad's health issues were finally diagnosed just a few weeks after we moved to the other side of the country.

The final chapter in the Sandy Burnette story has now been written, but his legacy will continue for generations. His accomplishments in the field of arson investigation and litigation are known by people all over the world, but I just know him as my dad. I'm the man I am today because of him, and if there's a place where we go when we leave this earth, then he's probably already up there telling stories, drinking coffee, smoking Arturo Fuente cigars, and either listening to a Santana album or watching My Cousin Vinny. He was a wonderful man and I will miss him every day.

I love you, Dad.

So thankful for having known Sandy as a friend and attorney. What a true southern gentleman & a dedicated husband and father! We could all learn from his ethics! Will always laugh when remembering his crazy stories about his directional challenges! It was rare when he arrived on time without some adventure getting there! Prayers for peace to Susan and your sons.

Sandy Burnette was a friend, mentor and teacher to me. He was the wittiest guy I ever knew and always made me laugh. Sandy's reputation always walked out in front of him. He was a renown first property insurance coverage attorney in the State of Florida and nationwide, his clients and admirers followed him around at all of his seminars, and he founded two law firms in Florida. But more profound, Sandy faced and fought his debilitating disease bravely and with honor. Sandy: Thank you for the opportunities you gave me. Good bye my friend.

My heart is broken. I had the pleasure of knowing Sandy as an incredibly talented Attorney and as a dear friend. I will miss him tremendously. My life is so much better for knowing Sandy and he has left an indelible mark on my life. We talked about work but my best memories of Sandy are when we talked about family; both his and mine. He was so incredibly proud of his children and in love with his bride. He also taught me the value of giving to others. His charitable work was such a model that we all can learn from. He truly cared about others. My friend may you rest in peace and may God great you with a box of your favorite cigars.

he was guy in second grade and my first friend when i started at christ the king; he was sandy when we re-met a few years later at jesuit - it appears the smile remained to the end...peace to your family.

Sandy became a friend through the Property Insurance Committee of the ABA. We attended conferences together and spoke on programs designed to aid in the fight against arson. But we also fished, golfed(I witnessed an Eagle he had)and smoked cigars together and thoroughly enjoyed each others company. He will be missed. The prayers of Peggy and I are with Susan and the boys.

Sandy was a great attorney and one I dreaded facing as an expert witness. His wit, wisdom, and humor were a treasure in the 30 years I've known him at FACAP. His dedication to fire prevention, Arson Prevention, and investigation practices are the reason we have well trained investigators and expert witnesses. His dedication to FS 806 et al, is beyond scope. I for one will miss this great man dearly. God Bless the Burnette family, collegues, and friends during this most somber of times.

Sandy was one of those people you were honored to have known. He made my carrier successful in my job as an insurance fraud investigator as the company attorney. He made my personal life better with his quick wit and never-ending humor. He was by far the most intelligent person I have ever known. I was lucky to have been called his friend. I spent time with Sandy in the last year and a half taking him to his farm in South Georgia or the condo in Carrabelle. These trips allowed Susan and Kevin a much needed break as Sandy's angel caregivers. It was great fun being with Sandy on these trips. We laughed, told war stories and drank moonshine. They are great memories that I will remember for the rest of my life. I was grateful to have spent this time with a truly great man. Sandy, I hope to see you again.
