Joy CONNOLLY Obituary

CONNOLLY, Joy 78, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in St. Petersburg. Her quiet last years contrasted with her earlier life on the go: raising chickens as a teen, being crowned the May Day Queen in high school, teaching for decades at Westgate Elementary as one of the first kindergarten teachers in Pinellas County, and, most proudly, raising three children on her own. She was strong and independent and intuitive and insightful. She liked a glass of wine in the evening, aerobics classes in mid-life, going to mass twice a week, and most of all the company of her family. A native of Newark, NJ, she was born Nancy Joy McCaffrey and moved to St. Petersburg in 1945. She graduated from St. Paul's High School and the University of Florida. In retirement she worked and volunteered at the Coliseum, Tropicana Field and Mahaffey Theater, traveled with her sister, went for daily walks, and was happy indeed. Her grandchildren all fondly remember her love of books and reading to them. She was predeceased by her parents, John J. and Rose L. McCaffrey; her brother, John McCaffrey Jr.; and her cherished sister, Janet McCaffrey. She is survived by her three children, Patrick (Diane) of Nashville, Erin (Steve) Wallace of Orlando, and Brian (Angela), also of Orlando; seven grandchildren, Meaghan, Brendan and Griffin Connolly, Shea and Molly Wallace, and Teaghan and Kieran Connolly; her sister-in-law, Ellen McCaffrey of Jacksonville; and four nephews and a niece. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to the American Heart Association. A memorial mass will be held at 9:30 am, Saturday in the chapel of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, followed by interment at Memorial Park Cemetery and a reception at the Tradewinds Resort in St. Peter Beach. Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joy was a true mentor and friend as I began my teaching career. She taught by example-to the children and adults who worked with her. We had lots of fun being teachers together. I loved hearing about her children as the proud Mother shared their successes. I think of Joy fondly. My thoughts are with her family as they miss Joy every day.

My condolences to Joy's family. How blessed the family is to have wonderful memories of a Mother and Grandmother who cherished her family. Joy and I had many laughs together as we team taught at Westgate. She was a wise and kind lady who taught the children as well as the adults she worked with by modeling what she believed. With Love, Kathy W.

Joy was a special friend to me these past 30 years, almost like a big sister to me. We taught together, then later working at the dome. We also just spent time together; either walking, playing tennis and canoeing (in the early years),even going on a cruise with Janet once. When enjoying these activities the topic of conversation was always her kids and grandchildren. She was so proud of each of them. Joy, you will be missed by all of us.

Joy and I were fellow teachers at Westgate for many years. She was a special person and a great teacher. My deepest sympathy goes to Joy's family for their loss. May wonderful memories bring comfort at this difficult time.

I want to extend my sympathy to the family. I am 47 years old and she was my kindergarten teacher. I actually saw her about 5 years ago at the gym and was so excited I followed her into the bathroom to ask her if she used to teach at Westgate. She smiled and said yes.. I was like a little girl and told her she was my teacher! I now work at St Jude School and am thankful I had such a wonderful first experience with a teacher that loved all of us! Debbie Gerdes

Love to you all from Kevin and Jan. We are saddened by Joy's passing (she was definitely a JOY - not a Nancy as I just learned was her given name) and send our love and prayers for you and your families at this difficult time. Will see you on Friday. With love and all best always, Jan
