It´s not the same without you. I´m longing for the day when we can make great music together again on the other side. I wonder what the mix board will look like in heaven. I miss you George.

I had another Bayou dream again the other night. Sometimes we are still mixing together and baking the cookies as we get ready for another session. Other times, I keep wandering around the place because I know something is missing - but I just can´t find what it is. I go back to mixing or out into the live room to move a microphone. All the while, I know there´s something not quite right with the song. So, I keep looking. When I finally awake in the morning, I swear it´s like I was just there. But now, fully aware, I know it was you that was missing from my visit to the Bayou.
I can´t tell you the amount of times I think about that place, and the music we made together. The laughs, the coffee - the way you would say, "Shoot Craig, that sounds good." How you would answer the phone and it would sound so cool in only the way you could do it. So, I´d try to copy you (like with many other things) and sometimes, if I got it just right, after I said "Bayou," people would say, "George!" And I´d say, "Nope, it´s Craig!" and I´d love that I´d pulled it off.
Music is timeless. And sometimes it feels like we were just together - especially after a night visit. I´ve always dreamed vividly - which can make our night visits full of such happy memories and then difficult realizations. I´m married now, George. To the girl I left Nashville for. We´ve got a kid who just this very night was singing along to Get Back by The Beatles on full volume in his room, holding his guitar, stomping his feet, and waving his hair as if he was the one performing it. I quietly pretended not to watch - but was loving every second of it. And I thought of how I loved music so much - and how I was watching him love his first musical crush. And, I thought of you.
One, two, buckle my shoe.

Dear George. It's Rusty Gordon. Remember me? The Happy Guy. Just found out the lonesome news. We will be missing one of the best men in the world. For a moment, this "happy guy" is shedding a tear. You brought joy to my life and to all my friends who have listened to the music that you recorded over the years. The trip from San Diego to Nashville for me was always a hop, skip and a jump because I was coming to see "the man," and that's you, the man with many talents, the biggest was your heart. You may be gone, but I talk about you every day. Someday we will both be singing that song you did for me, "Long Gone," in the sky. Your friend forever-Rusty and Hope Gordon

George was my teacher in more ways than one. He taught me how to find the groove in a song and then how to stay out of the way. We recorded and mixed hundreds of songs together at The Bayou. You really get to know a person when you spend that amount of intimate time with them. Music is very intimate after all, very personal for all involved. We treated every song as if it was the most important song ever recorded because it always was to the writer(s) and performer(s). That was the way he worked. That was what he expected of me. I thank him for that. I thank him for the stories he would often tell me. I called it "the behind, behind the music." They were always great. I'll miss singing "Oh Baby" in rythm every chance we could while we listened to a playback. I still can't whistle, but because of George, I still try. Miss you Boss.

Dear George,
First of all, thank you! Thanks for being you. Mostly, thanks for being my friend. Thanks for believing in me and my music and for taking me under your publishing wing and tutelage… What an honor! Thanks for getting me together with Jerry Strickland. Not only did we become writing partners, we became good friends. Thanks for encouraging me to believe in me and to keep pursuing my dream even though we knew we'd hear “no” many times. Not only for my sake, but in your honor, will I continue to keep writing, keep making music and keep pursuing this dream relentlessly.
Thanks for having me on your caller ID and for answering my calls. Even though the miles from Michigan to Tennessee were often between us, I was thankful for the telephone that could bring us together. Man, I already miss our phone conversations. I wanted to call you the other day, but…
Thanks for being interested in the rest of my life. I loved it when you thought enough of me to call and ask me a veterinary medicine question or just a general question about Daisy. I'm thinking of her and knowing that she will miss you… but she was the luckiest dog to have you as her master. Thanks for wanting to hear my stories of farm calls and surgeries and quirky clients, etc. I loved hearing your stories of recording sessions, masterful musicians, not-so masterful musicians and quirky clients etc. Thanks for letting me bring friends and family members into the studio for recording sessions. It meant a lot to me and to them. You were always so welcoming. I'll keep coming back to town, but it just won't be the same without you there to greet me. We had many more things on our list to do together but time just ran out.
All I know is if the “angel choir” needs an engineer for their next recording, they've got one of the best on his way to help them… and that tender analog recording will be music to the ears for eternity. I bet even they will need a bit of “Bayou Magic” and will probably need to be “punched” a few times.
I can't wait to see you again!
Your friend and resident singing veterinarian,
Dr. Dan

George was exceptional. He had that gentle, Southern manner that spoke volumes about upbringing and character. I loved working with him at Bayou, interlaced with so many entertaining stories of his experiences in life. It was always pleasant to sit back and enjoy them. George worked diligently -- he had a superb work ethic -- to give me the best recordings possible, and taught me invaluable lessons on how to produce, how to interact with musicians and singers. I was so lucky to have walked into the Bayou back in 2008, to have met my dear friend George. May he rest in peace with all the blessings he so richly deserves.

George was a priceless friend for 38 years. It was due to his encouragement, support and promotion that I moved to Nashville and had the best time ofu life at Ten Ten and made other invaluable friends. George was not only a true friend but also the consummate professional with the best 'esrs' anyone could have in the recording industry. He will be very missed but never forgotten. George helped me and a million other people get started in the business. My first studio time was with George in Shreveport back in the 70's. When I moved to Nashville, he got me my first gig at a demo studio he was rebuilding. As an engineer,George had the best 'boardside manner' that made the most nervous musician feel like an A Team Player. As a friend, I'm honored to add George to my 'Resume of Life'. Our little S'port group, Joe, Dino and the rest of ya'll, I wish I could be there to share the great stories and memories of one of the greatest friends anybody could ever have. Thank-you George for everything you did for us. We will all miss you. My thoughts are with all that knew and loved him.

George was such a kind and talented southern gentleman and I will always fondly cherish the time spent working with him on my recordings at The Bayou. One memory which stands out from the others will always be the advice he gave me through the headphones during my first ever recording session as I nervously practiced a lick: "You only need to get it right once." :-) I will also always remember that George made me feel like we were friends. I'll miss him.
November 30, 2011
Although I haven't seen him in 36 years, I can vividly recall the calm, gentle demeanor that George carried through every session that he engineered. He was always professional, yet compassionate to all struggling artists.
I also remember the way he always made the most of the limited resources that we had to work with at the Louisiana Hayride making Joe, Dino, Larry, and the rest of our group sound good on each show.
Sadly, too many friend's candles are going out lately. George's was a bright one...I will miss him!

"My heartfelt condolences to all of George's loved ones and friends (there are a lot of us). George was and will remain such a positive part of my songwriting experience. If you were lucky enough to record with George at the console you know what I'm talking about. He was a one man welcoming committee to us out of towners and a great introduction to Nashville. As a song man and a studio owner/ operator he was a consummate pro in every way. He made it look easy. I truly looked fwd to my trips down to Music Row because of George and I always left town a better writer because of him. I'm going to miss him.
