Sarah Taylor Obituary

TAYLOR, Sarah Sharp Age 75 of Nashville. Died January 24, 2010 at the Alive Hospice of Nashville due to complications from a car accident on January 19, 2010. Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, Sarah Robinson Sharp and Vernon Hibbett Sharp; brother, Dr. Vernon Hibbett Sharp; sister, Rev. Lorene Sharp White. Sarah was born October 2, 1934 in Nashville, TN and was raised on Inglehame Farm in rural Williamson County. She attended Robertson Academy, Ward Belmont and was a member of the first graduating class of Harpeth Hall. Sarah attended Sweet Briar College and then transferred to Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Cum Laude. Sarah was also a life member of the Centennial Club and Junior League. Sarah was a passionate supporter of dance and the Nashville Ballet. Her love of dance began when she danced with the Nashville Ballet under Albertine Maxwell. She was also a lover and supporter of the Nashville Opera. Sarah was dedicated to her church family at Christ Church Cathedral and the opportunity to live out her faith through ministries of the church. Sarah was a co-founder, patron and participant of the First Friday Services. Everything was scheduled around these services. She was able to promote worship through dance with her support of the Epiphany Dancers. Sarah was also able to touch many people through the Stephen's Ministry where, as a lay caregiver, she was able to actively share the strength of her faith with many people. Sarah also traveled extensively. She was drawn to exotic places - places of great natural beauty, high altitudes and spiritual significance. Her travels included climbing to the base camp of the Himalayas; Macchu Picchu, Peru; Mt. Sinai; Mt. Hood; Patagonia region of South America; Iona Island, Scotland; Skellig Islands, Ireland; St. David's Cathedral, Wales; Israel/The Holy Land; Tibet; Nepal; Kenya; the Galapagos Islands and Russia. Her greatest love, however, was for her family. She had a home in Beersheba Springs, TN where she loved to gather with family to hike, swim and enjoy the sunsets. She was knowledgeable of wildflowers and grew many around the cabin. She was always traveling between Nashville, Chattanooga and Beersheba to spend time with her grandchildren, her four sons and other family members. Sarah is survived by her four sons, Robert C. Taylor of Chattanooga, Vernon S. Taylor of Primm Springs, Harrison H. Taylor of Nashville and Douglas R. Taylor of Nashville; two daughters-in-law, Julie Yates Taylor and Deborah Cadwallader Taylor; five grandchildren, Tru, Hayes, Campbell, Reed and Elise; her sisters, Gertrude Sharp Caldwell (Ben) and Margaret Sharp Howell (Bill); sister-in-law, Dr. Alix Weiss-Sharp; many dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended relatives. Visitation for Sarah will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, Nashville, TN on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 4 til 6 p.m. and Wednesday, January 27, 2010 from 1:00 til 1:45 p.m. The memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 27, 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Friday Service at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37305 or the Beersheba Springs Historical Society, P.O. Box 117, Beersheba Springs, TN 37305. WOODLAWN-ROESCH-PATTON FUNERAL HOME, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, TN, (615) 383-4754

A life well lived, unfortunately cut far too short.

Dear Douglas, Margaret, Ruth, Alix, Monica, and all your family,

I think of Sarah as always dancing with the angels...I imagine her passing into heaven as seamless.

Sarah was a Muse for me, as I am sure she was for others. I have so many thoughts about how she shaped First Friday, me, Epiphany, the dancers and the First Friday participants. We were all touched and inspired by her love and heartfelt generosity. She was the most unique spiritual patron and guide. I keep seeing the view of and from her home high above Nashville, a home that she chose for its specialness. Each time I stayed with her I woke up and entered the kitchen to find a note of spiritual reflection. And then when I sat down to the table there was always a book opened to a beautiful photograph of a painting or sculpture, or other amazing artpiece that inspired whatever I was working on. Her loveliness, the gorgeous view that she provided, everything about being in her presence and home was a portal to heaven and beauty and God. Stars at night, blue skies or clouds during the day, God's creation was abundant at her homes.

I think of her Beersheba place and our time planning the early First Fridays there...my first experience with Sarah musing our work...what an amazing and inspired time we had.

While I have missed her in the flesh these past few years, the knowledge of her support for my studies and life has strengthened me.
Sarah has inspired me spiritually with a love, support and belief that will carry me for ever. It was a surprising and amazing thing that someone who "got me" spiritually and "danceually" would appear to allow First Friday to blossom that first and for so many more years!
I know that she will continue to shape us and many others into eternity.

With love, respect and admiration for her, and deepest sorrows for all your family,

Grete Gryzwana

Dearest Doug and the entire Taylor family,

I know that this time is dark, but as the light begins to rise again on the horizon, remember the lesson that your mother's life instilled in you all. Life is for the living. Embrace each day, revel in its beauty and delight in each new adventure.

I did not have the honor of sharing a lot of time with Ms. Taylor, but the moments I did spend with her proved that she lived her life just that way. Her smile was always quick to be offered and the pride in her boys was always in her eyes.

My condolences and prayers are with you all. Doug, I am always just a phone call away.

I will always cherish a memory of Sarah from a dance she gave at a Stephen Ministries retreat one time at St. Mary's in Sewanee. She was dressed as a Dragonfly, with wings, a flowing gown w/ christmas tree lights underneath. She gracefully entered the room, danced forward, paused in a graceful forward stance three different times. On the fourth attempt she had come to the end of the entension cord and was abruptly cut short in that final trust forward. We all started laughing hysterically until we were all awash in tears of joy.

Though Sarah may have come to the end of her earthly tether, there is no doubt that her new wings have carried her forward to the land of light and love. This time our tears are ones of sadness, but there will be no tears in heaven on her arrival.

Dear Doug, Harrison, Vernon, and Rob,

I cannot begin to say how sorry I am about the death of your dear mother. I have very fond memories of her going all the way back to my freshman year at McCallie when Doug and I first met and were roommates. She was such special, kind, loving, and graceful person, and one of the many, many reasons why I feel a deep spiritual bond with the Taylor family. My prayers are with you all.

May Sarah's soul, and the souls of all the departed, rest in peace.

Dear Vernon, Harrison, Doug, Rob, and the other members of the Taylor Family,

Sarah was such a graceful, beautiful, kind, and loving person. My memories of her are kept bright, and I fondly remember her quick smile, and her appreciation of all things beautiful, especially in the natural world. Mostly though, her adoration of you, her family, was readily apparent and effusive. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincere wishes,
