Robert Younts Obituary

Published by Tennessean on Mar. 22, 2016.
Robert Lee Younts, Jr.

Nashville, TN

Robert Lee Younts, Jr. born February 2, 1950, passed away on March 21, 2016; loving father.

Preceded in death by his parents; Robert Lee Younts, Sr. and Dorotha Brown Younts, brother; Donald Wayne Younts, all of Little Rock, Arkansas.

He is survived by son; Cory Manning Younts of Nashville and niece; Laura Younts Crowder of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mr. Younts graduated from Little Rock Central High School and was college educated at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He spent most of his life in the music business. Starting at age fifteen, he worked as a musician, disc-jockey, and vocalist including a stint with an Arkansas rock band, the Merging Traffic, who would record for Decca Records. He promoted some of the first big rock concerts held in Little Rock and Memphis. He moved to Nashville in 1973 and immediately went to work as a drummer for recording artists Nat Stuckey and Mel Tillis. He was with Tillis through 1985 at which time he helped start Bobby Roberts Booking Agency, a company he later served as both Sr. Vice-President and President. In 1994, he was recognized by the Country Music Association when he was nominated for Agent of the Year. During his career, he represented many artists including Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, John Anderson, Bobby Bare and many others.

He was also a founding member of the Smurfs, a widely known group of country music veterans and friends who got together once a year to golf and camp out at various Tennessee State Parks, and just enjoying each other's fellowship. At night, around a roaring campfire, the Smurfs would pass around a guitar to sing lots of songs or tell many a funny story that became a "Smurfs in The Round." The music from these entertainers would delight nearby campers all around them and usually didn't end until the Park Rangers came by to wish them a goodnight.

At one time Mr. Younts was very involved with Boy Scouting in Middle Tennessee. He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 217 at First Presbyterian Church for fourteen years and helped over fifty boys earn the rank of Eagle Scout. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award from the Middle Tennessee Council and he served for many years on the summer camp staff at Boxwell Reservation.

Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN. Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all donations be made to Boxwell Scout Reservation in the name of Robert Lee Younts, Jr.

Bob was indeed one of the funniest human beings Ive ever known and my last time w/ him, a weekend in Nashville, included me & Jim Bradberry seeing The Crows for the first time- and a great visit with Cory. The weekend was one of the highlights of my life- just hysterical with Bob as a consummate host. He is and will be in heart and mind forever, and I miss him terribly, but have memories for a lifetime.

Bob,
Many scouts will remember you and the Japanese Arisaka rifle that you loaned me for many summer camps for show and tell during the Shotgun Merit Badge class. This was interesting and the scouts enjoyed the brief history I gave each week of this WW II historical rifle.
May your hiking, camping and teaching scouts in the great beyond keep you young at heart. I will look you up when I get there and we can continue our friendship and tell them all about the great times we had at Boxwell Scout Reservation and Camp Craig.
We will have to look up our old friend Pat Degau
"Old Soldier" and go out for pizza and tell our tales of Boxwell. "Shotgun"

The Tillis family adored Bob. He was both a family friend and drummer for our Dad, Mel, for years. We mourn his loss. His service exemplified what Bob meant to so many both in the music industry and scouting circles. We were not surprised of the impact he had on so many in his world and his backyard! He was just that kind of person. Our memories are priceless. Prayers for Cory, Janet and his family. Cindy Tillis Shorey

Cory,
So sorry to learn of your dad's passing. My time spent with Troop 217, under your dad's leadership, provided me with memories I will treasure for a lifetime. I'm glad I knew your dad. May God and your friends provide you with the comfort and strength you need to deal with this loss.

Was so shocked and saddened to hear from Cory of Bob's passing. He was my dear friend, former bandmate, & fraternity little brother. We roomed together on the road in Merging Traffic days & spent countless hours together playing and practicing. We were always in touch, but spoke, text, or emailed regularly in last 4-5 years. A couple of summers ago, Jim Bradberry & myself went to Nashville to spend weekend with him and see "OCMS" play for first time live. Absolutely one of the most fun-packed weekends of my life. Bob was so gracious, funny, informative & entertaining. One of the wittiest people & funniest story tellers I have ever known. Hysterical! Will treasure the trip forever and will miss him terribly. Expressing my most sincere sympathy to you Cory, Janet, and all his family & loved ones.

Many years ago Bob opened his heart, home and family to me and my family. I will be forever indebted to his kindnesses, not to mention all the loving laughter he brought to our lives. It is heartbreaking that Cory has lost his dad at such a young age (both of them). The two of you were quite a pair, as this photo shows. Much love to all Bob's family and loved ones during this sorrowful time.

March 24, 2016

I am stunned. I grew up in the same neighborhood with Bob, and have so many memories of all the adventures we had together growing up in the sixties. I loved the family. His dad was like a second father to me. The greatest compliment I can pay you my friend, is that you were much like him.

Condolences to Cory and the family. Bob was a great Scoutmaster, helped both of my sons achieve the rank of Eagle. R.I.P., Bob. "And now, may the great Scoutmaster of all Scouts, be with us until we meet again. Goodnight, Bob!"

Friends in high school and fraternity brothers in college, Bob and I reconnected about two and a half years ago. We have stayed in close contact since then, attending OCMS concerts and traveling to Branson to see some of Bob's old friends from his Mel Tillis days. Bob's wit and storytelling about his musician days kept me laughing! I will be forever grateful for our renewed friendship.

Rest in peace dear "little Bob". I was a close friend of Bob & Dot in Little Rock and knew Bob Jr. as a child. I miss them and also miss Donny. My condolences to the family. I shared a love of music with Dot. We had fun playing and singing the old gospel songs. Dot was pianist and organist and Bob Sr. sang in choir.

It was always a pleasure to see Bob, as an Old Crow Medicine Show roadie I got to meet Bob & see what a proud papa he was. We became friends & he opened his home to me & my yoga buddies. It became our rest stop. Bob also opened his home to a stray dog for me. What a LARGE heart. We will miss you. We pray for your family.

At the end of each and every scout meeting ScoutMASTER Bob Younts would say "Be Prepared" and then ask prepared for "What" ... and we would all answer "For any ol thing". And then we would say "Good Night" to our scoutmaster.

Goodnight Scoutmaster Younts ... Good night Bob - A man who stood for all the right things - all the time. Someone who truly made a difference in countless lives.

One day Bob called his Mother and said can you fix supper for Mel Tillis and some band members?
They wanted fried chicken and biscuits with gravy. Dot of course fixed a big meal for them in a very short time. They really just stayed long enough for supper and then went on their way.
His Mother was my best friend and just lived down the street from me. A wonderful family!

May God rest his soul, I know he is with the Lord. I grew up with Bob, Donny and their parents, and I had the greatest respect and gratitude for them all. ("Little") Bob had a keen and quick wit and compassion for all, and he was unconditionally devoted to his son Corey. An Eagle Scout himself, over his lifetime he helped many others attain that high rank. He was an Eagle for life and always upheld Scouting's highest values and traditions. He will truly be missed, and I offer our family's heartfelt condolences.

Bob Younts was my friend and business associate. He was very instrumental in the early success of the Bobby Roberts Company as a dedicated and hard worker. He loved the music business and kept us laughing with his sense of humor and many "road" stories. I was most impressed with his attention and love for his son Cory. Bob ALWAYS took his vacation to spend his time at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp as a Scoutmaster and mentoring young scouts. He loved that. Bob is now in the presence of our Lord and I know is at peace. God bless you, Bob.
