Shirley had a wonderful "take charge" personality. Though she was legally blind she had to regularly remind me because she seemed to navigate her surroundings better than most. This March when my young son and I were visiting she helped me sew a pair of pants for him and we talked of making some wreaths for X-mas this year of small magnolia pods and tiny hemlock cones. She proposed a session of "Camp Shirley" next summer where she would put my messy boy through the paces far better than any military camp. We looked through her receipes and photographs of some completed dishes which she and her son worked on in preparation for a cookbook proposal. We did so much more in just one day last March - with no insight whatsoever that it would be a last visit. So much was planned for the future. Shirley's death leaves a large hole in my life. She was full of life and easy with conversation.
