Joseph W. Treen, 69, of Rock Hill, S.C., and formerly of Millville, died in Rock Hill on Monday, March 14, 2011, after an extended illness. Born in Millville, Joe lived in Millville most of his life, before moving to and living in South Carolina for the past 15 1/2 years.
Joe served in the U. S. Coast Guard, and was assigned to the Coast Guard cutter Tamaroa from 1959 to 1963. After the service, he worked for Wheaton Industries as a mold maker, and was a member of Local No. 7. He also was a life member of the Millville Fire Department, and volunteered for the Millville Rescue Squad.
Joe was a member of the American Legion Nabb-Leslie Post No. 82. He also was a coach in the Millville Girls Softball League, and he and his wife were instrumental in helping construct the first softball field at the Cedar Street Complex. He will be remembered for his strength at arm wrestling, precision on the dartboard and his love for motorcycles. After retirement, he also installed fencing with his buddy, Jack Durfee.
Joe is survived by his wife, Gwen; daughters, Vickie Joe Volpe and husband Dr. Donald Volpe of Hammonton and Dawn Lynette Lupperger and husband James Lupperger of Millville; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. Treen and Alma (Young) Treen.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rocap Shannon Memorial Funeral Home of Millville. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Relatives and friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Gwen, Please accept my deepest sympathy. Skip will always be remembered - he was a good man and one of my brother Larry's best friends. My parents also thought the world of Skip and enjoyed seeing him each year on the annual hunting trip.

Gwenn, So so sad!!! We have so many memories that link our families together. It's hard for me to look back at how life used to be and how many loved one are gone, but we did have great times and great memories.
