John Prokop Obituary

East Lyme - John Prokop, 98, formerly of 147 Chesterfield Road, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Crescent Point at Niantic.

John was born March 10, 1911, in New York City, the son of Peter and Mary (Pawleny) Prokop.

For 25 years he was employed as an electrical draftsman at Electric Boat, retiring in 1976. A life member of the New London Lodge of Elks No. 360, he was also a founding member of the Flanders Fire Department, and a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. John's family was one of the original Walnut Hill "farm" families, and his appreciation for farming was evident in his love for gardening. He was also well known for carrying hard candy with him, and whenever he encountered someone, be it a family member, a neighbor, a co-worker, or even a stranger, John would offer them a piece.

He is survived by a son, John G. Prokop and his wife, Maggi, of East Lyme and a daughter, Sandra Meijer and her husband, Jan, of Hancock, Md.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ida (Stecewicz) Prokop; his parents; his brothers, Edward, Michael, and Harry Prokop; and a sister, Martha Bialowans.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Matthias Church, Chesterfield Road, East Lyme. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at St. Matthias Church. Entombment will be private.

Donations in his memory may be made to St. Matthias Parish, 317 Chesterfield Road, PO Box 25, East Lyme CT 06333.

To the Prokop Family,

I cannot tell you the amount of candy I ate over the years - he would always have a handful of candy when he came to the senior center and I could never refuse. Nice, nice man.

Dear John,Maggie,Sandra and family,

Uncle John will never be forgotten.

I have wonderful memories of him .

For many years as he would drive by our house when going to visit his mother throw handfuls of candy out of his car window to my appreciative awaiting children. They looked forward to him driving by.
I enjoyed so much talking with him about the "Prokop" famly and about his early memories of the town of East Lyme .
He always had a joke to share with Bob.
He was just a really nice man.
May his soul rest in peace.
Love,
Theresa
