Keith Heidtman Obituary

Norwich - 1st Lieutenant Keith Neal Heidtman, 24, of 133 Scotland Road, died Monday, May 28, 2007 in Diyala, north of Baghdad, Iraq. Keith was one of two pilots shot down by enemy fire in their OH-58D Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter.

Keith was born in Norwich on September 2, 1982. He is survived by his parents Maureen and Arthur Robidoux and Kerry Scot Heidtman; his sister, Keely Jean Heidtman and her husband Gregory LaPointe; and his longtime girlfriend, Meghan Lenehan.

He also leaves behind his grandparents, Howard and Louise Heidtman of Norwich, Regina O'Brien of Cos Cob, and Georgia Robidoux of Norwich. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Eugene F. O'Brien. Keith will be deeply missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins and his much-loved friends.

Keith was a 2001 graduate of the Norwich Free Academy where he excelled both academically and athletically. In the summer of 2002, he served as a lifeguard and counselor at The Hole in The Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, where he worked with children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Keith's experiences at the camp left him with fond memories of both the kids and staff with whom he worked. His time at the camp was influential in developing his personal character and enthusiasm for helping others.

After high school, he attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs, where he graduated in 2005 with honors, receiving a bachelor of science degree in resource economics. While attending the university, Keith was a cadet in the Department of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and, upon graduation, earned the title of Distinguished Military Graduate in recognition of his outstanding qualities of leadership, high moral character, academic achievement, and exceptional aptitude for military service. Keith was then selected to attend the U.S. Army Aviation Warfighting Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he began his military service as an aviator.

In August 2006, Keith earned his wings and was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. In December 2006, he was deployed to Iraq, where he served until his death.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the Norwich Free Academy Alumni Gymnasium from 6 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich at 10 a.m. with a burial service to follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Keith Heidtman to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp at 555 Long Wharf Drive, Department W, New Haven, CT, 06511 (203-772-0522).

The Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, is entrusted with the arrangements.

wear blue: run to remember

May 28, 2016

In a Circle of Remembrance this morning, the Bethesda, MD, chapter of wear blue: run to remember read aloud Lt. Keith Heidtman's name and held him and his loved ones in thought on this anniversary. We then ran onward, creating a living tribute to honor him, his legacy, and those of others killed in action on this day.

Our sincerest condolences to his loved ones. In his honor, we will continue to run - for the fallen, for the fighting, and for the families.

To Keith's family:
I had the pleasure of knowing Keith...he was my next door neighbor while stationed at Ft. Rucker, AL. I just recently found out about his death, which came as a great shock, from a memorial picture my facility custom framed. I know it has been over a year, but I would still like to show my respects. He was a fun, dedicated, quiet guy and he even helped me fix my washer machine, which is still running. So thanks, Keith! I know your in a better place and your death was not vain. You were doing what you loved...flying and serving our country. I will never forget you!

June 28, 2008

You are remembered and respected. Thank you 1st Lt Heidtman!

May 28, 2008

Keith you are a tremendous man! I had the difficult task of taking over Keith's Platoon after he was killed. It was honor to stand in the shadow of this warrior and true Hero. He never turned from a challenge and always faced the enemy head-on. Your men will always remember you and hold their future leaders to your standard. To honor you there will never be another Ghostrider 26! May you rest in peace until we are all called back into the presence for Him who sent us here. May your family know that when you are called a Hero, it is because you are.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Keith, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Today is Memorial Day 2008. One year ago we lost this Brother in Arms. I am in Iraq today thinking about Keith and our other fallen comrades. Keith was an outstanding young Officer and Gentlemen. I had the privilege of being his first instructor in the Kiowa Warrior. I remember how dedicated he was and enjoyed his humor. His personality had to be a product of superb upbringing. To his family I wish you well. Know that I and many others think and pray for him often. God Bless.

To the family and friends of Keith,

I had the privilege of training alongside Keith at UCONN ROTC and got to know him during my 2 years in the program; therefore this is even harder to swallow that he has passed.

However, I returned from my year in theater just 2 weeks after his passing as well and consider myself extremely lucky to be home - therefore I wanted his family and friends to know he will ALWAYS be remembered and praised.

As a veteran and willing to go back at a moment's notice in honor of him and all of our fallen and wounded brothers and sisters, I offer again my prayers and sympathy in such a grave loss.

Sincerly,

Dear Heidtman Family,

I realize there is NOTHING that could be said to you that could ever ease the loss that your family has endured... I wouldn't even begin to try.

I simply felt the need to convey my deepest, heart felt condolences, to those that lived nearest me...

I SIMPLY HAD TO reach out to those that lived closest to me and let their families know that the sacrifice that their SONS & DAUGHTERS have made ARE NOT, and WILL NOT be forgotten, and were not made in vain!

We gladly add your beloved son to our prayers, along with ALL of our other fallen Sons & Daughters!

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

June 10, 2007

Lt Heidtman served his nation by answering the call to duty, without hesitation, and without remorse for he had a mission to accomplish. He did not know that God would also call him shortly after arriving in Iraq, to forever sit at his table. His family has given to us the greatest gift of all, and the example for all to see and emulate. As a young soldier, Lt Keith Heidtman represented everything that our nation stands for and regretfully, willingly laid down his life so that Americans may remain free and secure. His family demonstrated the courage which so many only read about as they graciously and with the most profound dignity, allowed a greatful nation to also welcome their precious son home and grieve with them. The greatest gift a soldier can give, is life itself. For never can there be greater gift, than to give your life so that others may live in freedom and peace. During times of war, the greatest gift a soldier can receive is support from the patriots at home, for whom he so readily fights for. More so, the family of a fallen soldier who bears the ultimate weight of this so precious a gift, receives the gift of love and hope which can only be given by the unknown patriots who gather from afar to honor their noble sacrifice, so freedom may live. Always remember, that only two defining forces have ever sworn to give their life for you and kept that promise - Jesus Christ and the American Soldier - Lt Heidtman.

May God forever bless and protect this family.

To all of Keith’s family-

I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Keith, but having read almost every article that has been written about him he was everything a Hero stands for. I wanted to take a moment to honor him and you, for you are a Hero in your own right having raised Keith you instilled in him all the things every parents want their children to be, in his short life he made a huge impact on family – friends and now a nation. He fought for millions of people he didn’t know and would never met all the while thinking of his family and friend and all they have done for him. So I thank you for taking the time to raise your son in a way that has changed millions of lives forever. Do not bow your head and morn the lose of your son; Hold your head high with the pride that a nation feels. Your son was your hero the day he was born but died America’s Hero; I thank him in my prayers along with all the other Military men & women fighting but I also thank you for he never would have been the man he was if it weren’t for you!

Although I never knew Keith personally, he was known to everyone. He was one of so many Americans who took that courageous step beyond our shores to keep those of us who remain behind safe. He is one of the many who work tirelessly under what are unbearable conditions for most of us, that allow us to live free. He is one of the many who gave his life for the belief that there can be good in this world. I share in the loss of your son, as he was a son to all of us. He was an American Son. God Bless Him and You.

Your Son was, as we all are, part of mankind.
With his death was lost a part of us all.
A loss to us all, though incomparable to your personal loss.
Thank you for giving the world a brave and heroic man.
Thanks to him for giving himself to mankind.
May time swiftly wash away the grief of circumstance.
May memories hold seatdfast Keith's spirit through the ages.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of 1st Lt. Keith N. Heidtman, the Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.

May Keith rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the Heidtman family.

There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord,
and He shall sustain thee."
~ Psalm 55:22 ~

Hoping you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the days ahead, as this Country mourns with you, for Someone Very Precious to you, Who Is A Hero to all of us.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
