Michael Campbell Obituary

Ledyard - Michael Nicholas Campbell Sr., 47, of Gales Ferry, loving husband and father, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017.

Mike was born on April 6, 1969, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Nicholas Lekkas of Lombard, Ill. and the late Patricia Hovey. He grew up in Detroit, eventually moving to Gladwin, Mich. in 1987 where he later met his wife, Julie. They were married on Sept. 10, 1994. They lived in Lansing, Mich. for several years where Mike worked at Quality Farm and Fleet, Tractor's Supply and Demmer Corporation. Later, they moved to Ohio and then in 2004 they relocated to Connecticut. Throughout this time, Mike and his wife had six beautiful children.

It was while they were in Ohio that Mike assumed the most important job of his life - choosing to stay home and raise his children. Because of that decision, his kids were blessed to spend an abundance of time with him. He took advantage of that time making great memories, including tractor rides, playing badminton, year round bonfires (without s'mores), making ice rinks in the backyard, and an appreciation of music choices that were not limited to one genre. He also bestowed sage advice to his children, including what the monkey said when he got his tail cut off, that lost items are actually behind your ear, you really only need one haircut a year and that sometimes it's best to take the long way home.

Mike could be found repairing small engines with his son in his "dad plaid", fishing, riding vintage mopeds and playing a good game of hide and seek with his doggy dog, Maelie Girl. He loved a good snow storm because it gave him an opportunity to get on a tractor and plow driveways. Mike was an avid sports fan, whether playing, watching or coaching. He loved rooting for his Detroit teams, including the CT Tigers. He especially enjoyed encouraging his kids at their sporting events and was truly their biggest fan.

In addition to his loving wife and best friend of 22 years and his father; he leaves his children, Nikki Campbell of Watertown, Ally, Mikey Jr., Sam, Abby and Robert Campbell, all of Gales Ferry; brothers, Richard Van Buren of Gaylord, Mich. and Robert Van Buren (Jennifer) of Canton, Ohio; sisters, Beth Wenburg (Ryan) of Hartford, Mich. and Christine Van Buren of Gladwin, Mich; sister, Lilia Lekkas of Grayson, Ga.; brother, Emmanuel Lekkas (Georgina) of Westmont, Ill.; and his uncle, Robert Campbell of Wayne, Mich. He is also survived by many nephews, Jacob, Caden, Christian, Elijah, Isaiah, Vincent; nieces, Anna, Kamea, Blair, Vanessa, Christiana; and many in-laws and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Hovey; and his grandmother, Helen Campbell.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at St. David's Episcopal Church, 284 Stoddards Wharf Road, Gales Ferry, followed by a reception at the church. Burial will be private and there are no calling hours.

Mike was a fierce proponent of his children's education. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Campbell Children's Education Fund, Citizens Bank, Gales Ferry, CT 06335.

I was pretty shocked to learn of Mike's passing.
I worked with him at Gladwin Ace Hardware. (a long time ago!) There wasn't a single day that he didn't come to work with a smile on his face and an infectious energy. He was always willing to help out and if you were down and out when you showed up for work, you were surely in good spirits when you left. That's what Mike did, he lifted people up with that smile and laugh and made them better.
May God bless his wife, children and family. And may you rest in the comfort of knowing that he is safely wrapped in the arms of his Heavenly Father.

My sincerest condolences to the Campbell family in the recent sudden passing of Mike. I did not know him personally but listened to him many times when he called Stu Bryers WICH radio talk show. We loved his calls and loved all the wonderful things he shared. We respectfully referred to him as "Super dad" as that is what he truly was! Your family has been so blessed and Mike as well with such a wonderful family. He was so dedicated to the family and was an awesome example of what a great dad should be..he was so devoted.
We will miss him so much and his calls that enlightened all of us.
Many listeners called into the show when they heard and expressed their sadness and condolences. Gods blessings upon your family and may He watch over you always.
I wanted to attend the memorial however I read about it too late after hearing about it first on the show. Blessings! We will remember you Mike!

I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's passing. He was a Godsend to my husband and me, and to all our neighbors in Gales Ferry. He watched out for all the elderly in the neighborhood, and would voluntarily come in the middle of the night to plow our driveway, never asking for one thing in return. He fixed all our mechanical equipment and, through it all, with a smile on his face that was so endearing. When my husband became disabled, he was there even more to lend a hand. He even helped us move. It was obvious to us how much he adored his wife and children and talked often about how proud he was to be their father. To me, it seemed, Mike loved life to its fullest extent. Mike was a good and honorable man and I am devastated for his family. He leaves an indelible mark on my heart. I pray my husband was there to greet him as he walked through the gates of heaven and I pray for the comfort of his family. Please know you are all in my hearts and prayers and I send my deepest sympathy.

I am so saddened to read Mike's obituary. I did not have the pleasure of personally knowing Mike, but I certainly enjoyed listening to his calls to Stu Breyer on WICH. It was very apparent that Mike was very loving and devoted to his family. I'm certain Mike could be described as "One in a Million." My heartfelt sympathy to his wife Julie, children, and all his family.

Our family offers our innermost
condolences to the Campbell family.
I had the pleasure to meet Mike and his son via the small engine repair business.
My wife, son and dog ran into Julie, their young son and dog at the top of Bluff Point this past summer and enjoyed great conversation.
