Howard Lapham was one of the desert's great treasures. His love of the city and its progress made him one of the great visionaries here.
He is missed already.

My father Harlan Georgesco worked with Howard since the 50's, when I was a young boy. When I moved to the desert from L.A. I went to show my wife Howard's office, and there he was to my suprise. We talked about old times and he gladly shared stories about my father that I never knew. I was so impressed by his sharp wit and optimistic approach especially at the age of 90, he was truely a man happy with his work at hand. When he told me he was in his 90's and worked from 7 am to 11 am Monday through Friday and to vist when I was in the neighborhood I did. He had so many stories about Palm Springs to tell. My favorite was when he made a pact with the Lord that if he got Thunderbird he would give up his trademark cigar and quit drinking hard liquer. Guess what he got the job and was on the straight and narrow ever since. My fathers archieves recently were aquired by the Getty Museum. I stoped by his office to maybe get some of my Dad's renderings and he was gone. I called his home number he gave me and was able to get a few renderings he saved after closing his office last year. It was a real pleasure to listen to him talk about city council meetings and turning the golf course behind the Hyatt in Palm Springs into a Hotel shopping complex with the excitment of a child on Christmas. He was so excited that there was enough room for 900 cars to park on the perimeter. This was only maybe 6 months ago and his spirit was as sharp as ever. I was looking forward to seeing him again to share news about my father with him at CoCo's his favorite breakfast stop. I guess he and my father will talk directly now. I will truely miss Howard, eventhough I was only a child when I met him, he still remained larger than life to me. I guess this is why he was able to do so much to shape Palm Springs. I know he will be missed by all that knew him, Love Christopher & Maria Georgesco
