Lawrence Cortright Obituary

Cortright, Lawrence "Larry"

Formerly of West Danby: Lawrence (Larry) E. Cortright, 90, died on August 12, 2011. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold Cortright and Tresa Cowell Cortright and two brothers, James H.Cortright and John E. Cortright. Larry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene Weber Cortright, a son, Elbert Cortright (Dennis Deming) of Portland, OR, and a stepson, Gary Hollenbeck (Sandra White) of Spencer. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Karen Hollenbeck of Spencer and Carla (Howard) Andrews of Wilseyville, 4 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Larry is also survived by a brother, Ross D. (Elaine) Cortright of Spencer and a sister-in-law, Winifrid Cortright, also of Spencer. Larry was born on March 24, 1921 at North Spencer, NY. He received his early education in one room schools in Spencer, Newfield and West Danby where the teacher was often his Mother or one of her two sisters or her brother. After graduation from Ithaca High School, Larry worked on his parents' dairy farm, eventually buying the farm and operating it until the mid 1960s. He then worked at Cornell as an animal caretaker until retirement. He was a past Master of the West Danby Grange. Larry loved the outdoors, especially deer and coon hunting and fishing, although "being out there" was more important than being successful. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 21, from 2-4 p.m. in the community room of the West Danby Fire Station, 47 Sylvan Lane, West Danby. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Danby Fire Department.
