Alan McAdams Obituary

McAdams, Alan Kellog

Alan Kellog McAdams of 2 The Byway, Ithaca, NY, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2013 after a short illness. He was 83. Alan was born in Houston, TX in 1930 to Luther Lewis McAdams and Marion Gordon McAdams. He married Ann Wheaton Svensson in 1956. He and Ann recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Alan graduated from Yale University in 1952. After participating in the Naval ROTC Program at Yale, he served four years on the USS Gatling, and was engaged in the Korean conflict. He then served four years in the Active Reserves as he earned, courtesy of the GI Bill, his MBA and PhD in Economics at Stanford University. Secondary to his love for his family, he was devoted to Cornell University, where he taught for 50 years. In 1960 Dr. McAdams arrived in Ithaca to teach managerial economics. Over his tenure at what is now the Johnson Graduate School of Management he taught a broad spectrum of innovative courses. Throughout his career his research focused on enhancing American competitiveness. His work influenced emerging technologies in areas vital to the global economy, such as flat panel displays, high-speed fiber-optic networks, and sustainable development, to name a few. His sympathies lay with the underdog and the legitimate role of government in ensuring an even playing field. He retired in 2010 as professor emeritus. In the early 1970's he was a visiting associate professor at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, followed by an appointment as a senior staff economist on the President's Counsel of Economic Advisors. His areas of responsibility there included the economics of antitrust policy, regulation of telecommunications and other industries, pollution control, and science and technology policy. These issues continued to engage him throughout his life. From 1972 to 1981 he was chief economist, expert witness, and consultant to the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice in United States v. International Business Machines. In 1990 he was a visiting fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute. A Lifetime Member of the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Professor McAdams provided valuable insights for setting national policy regarding the development of the telecommunications industry. Over the years he testified frequently before Congress on these issues. His publications include books, monographs, white papers, invited journal articles, and others. In 1996 and in 1998 Johnson School graduates selected him for the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award. This honor was especially meaningful to him. He is survived by his wife and three sons: Alan Kellogg McAdams Jr., Jeffrey Chisholm McAdams (Katia Kubicek), and Kendall Gordon McAdams. He is also survived by his brother, Kenneth George McAdams; his granddaughter, Miranda McAdams; Miranda's mother, Donna Holt; his grandson, Gideon McAdams; his brother-in-law, Eric Svensson; and many treasured nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his son, Lee Svensson McAdams, and two brothers, Gordon Luther McAdams and Randall Hale McAdams. His family will remember him for how well he cared for them with his steadfast heart, strength, and humor. They are grateful to Dr. John Costello and the health care professionals at Cayuga Medical Center, Classen Home Health Associates, and Hospicare. A family memorial service to celebrate his life will be arranged.

Not sure what to say?

September 19, 2013

Dear Ann and family,

There are so many things to say about Alan's long and fruitful life. One only has to talk, even for a moment, with colleagues, students, family and friends to know just how much this special man meant to so many people, young and old alike.

We met Alan often on the path around Beebe Lake and he always wanted to stop and chat about different things. What we recall most is how fondly he talked of you, Ann, and it was so obvious how much he loved you -- so beautiful.

The world is blessed with a few true gentlemen and Alan was one of them. He will be sorely missed.

Our deepest condolences.

Dearest Ann, I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. I hope you find comfort hearing from the many people whose lives he touched so deeply. I count myself among those so enriched. His passion for his work and for his students was only surpassed by his love for you and his family. He always described you as a saint for putting up with him and when he talked about you it was with love and admiration and a glint in his eye. I will miss seeing him in the halls of Sage and I will never forget him.

To The McAdams Family:

I'd like to extend my sincerest condolences to your family. Professor McAdams made a most profound impression upon me as an MBA student. I still maintain many of his recorded lectures from a Management Consulting class. In addition, I was fortunate enough to introduce my wife Dannye to Professor McAdams at a recent Alumni event at the Johnson School. I will miss Professor McAdams for his wonderful insight and thought provoking lectures.

Kind Regards,
Tony Riley

Dr. McAdams was a major influence in my turn to University teaching, 20 years after graduating from the Johnson School. Among a community of excellent teachers and advisers at Cornell, he was the tops.

His brilliant analyses, and ability to apply theory to the 'real world' influenced me throughout my career, from consulting to marketing to teaching.

As a teacher, we all hope to be remembered like Dr. McAdams, a great influencer of young minds. His success is not just what he accomplished, which is immense, but also what his students accomplished, and what they became as citizens of the World.

In these regards, Dr. McAdams' legacy has an embarrassment of riches.

I am the better from your instruction, Dr. McAdams.

I've stared at this screen long enough… There just aren't words that define a moment let alone a life so tirelessly fought. The achievements have been noted, and the accolades will continue, but it was in his losses he rose to his greatest heights. It was in times of difficulty, personal tragedy, and hardship that his efforts should be measured, for it was in adversity his courage was shown, and in his grief his perseverance excelled. So who are we mourning but ourselves, surely not someone who has kept the faith, and fought the good fight. It is a time to reflect with admiration and now joy, as we imagine the boy running to welcome his dad.

To The McAdams Family:

Your husband/father/grandfather was an outstanding teacher, who had a tremendous impact on me.

I especially enjoyed our trip together to Japan in the winter of 1994, where I learned so much from him.

A great professor who contributed so much to Cornell.

My Condolences,
