ARTHUR, RUTH MERWIN  
RUTH MERWIN ARTHUR, 98 LAKELAND - Ruth Merwin Arthur, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. She was born June 10, 1917, in Holyoke, Mass., to Mary Josephine and John Clifford Merwin. The family moved to Milwaukee shortly after. Ruth was a member of the Milwaukee Junior League and was active in their children's theater. She was also active in community theater. During World War II she directed a day camp for children whose parents were working in the defense plants. The camp was sponsored by the Milwaukee Urban League. She also taught swimming to children with polio. In the summer of 1945 she went to work as a civilian employee attached to the Army in Amarillo, Texas. She was a secretary to the classification officers. She met and married Capt. Thomas Arthur of New Jersey and after the war they moved to New Jersey. She was a member of the Englewood Junior League and was active in community theater. In 1977, Thomas retired from the Western Electric Co. and they moved to Lakeland, where they enjoyed the theater, arts and sports. Ruth played tennis and golf into her 90s. She was a member of the Polk Museum of Art and rarely missed an exhibit. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, five children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She requested no services and wished that her friends will remember their last time together.

VELMA REBECCA ARMES COCHRAN, 77 LAKELAND - Velma Rebecca Armes Cochran, 77, of Lakeland, FL, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2015, at the Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, FL. She was born in Green Bay, Prince Edward County, VA, on Nov 21, 1937, to George Callie Armes and Bessie Christine Garrett. She came to Florida in 1968 when her husband retired from military service. She is retired from the Florida Department of Transportation in Bartow FL. She was preceded in death by her father, George Callie Armes of Blackstone, VA, her daughter, Elizabeth Grace Setzer of Newport News, VA, and her sister, Frances Daniels on Hermitage, TN. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Bennie P. Cochran of Lakeland, FL, her mother, Christine Hadel (95 years old) of Farmville, VA, and her daughter, Laura L. Offield Hubbard of White Stone, VA, four grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 1820 E. County Rd 540A in Lakeland, FL, at 11:00 AM on Thursday, Aug 6, 2015. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. Stephen's Memorial Fund.

BERTA LOUISE MULFORD NEWMAN GOLDEN, 90 LAKELAND - Berta Louise Mulford Newman Golden, age 90, a lifetime resident of Lakeland, FL, died Tuesday, July 28th, 2015, at Oakbridge Healthcare due to complications from pneumonia. Berta was born on March 24th, 1925, and was the daughter of Oscar and Roberta Mulford, who precedes her in death. She is survived by her children Donald 'Donnie' and Judy Newman, Roberta 'Jean' Rayborn, Virginia 'Tadpole' and Steve Moore, James 'Jimmie' and Linda Newman, Robert 'Bobby' and Donna Newman, William 'Deen' and Debbie Newman, Edward 'Ed-die' Newman, Allan and Evelyn Newman, Lynnette Bielen, and brother William 'Uncle W' Mulford. Berta is preceded in death by her husband James Golden, her 1st husband Donald Newman, the father of all her children, eldest daughter Mary O'berry, brother Chester Mulford, brother Eustace 'Uncle Buddy' Mulford, sister Dicey Hayes, and son-in-law Ronald 'Joe' Rayborn. Berta is survived by 31 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren. Berta worked for Lakeland Regional Medical Center for 25 years in Central Supply before retiring. She was a member of Imperial Lakes First Baptist Church. Services will be held on August 2nd, 2015, at Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. The viewing for family will be 1 to 2 p.m. and for friends and neighbors from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The funeral follows directly after at 3:30 pm. Steve Moore will be officiating.

JOYCE A. GREELEY, 58 AUBURNDALE - Ms. Joyce A. Greeley, age 58, a resident of Auburndale passed away Thurs., July 30, 2015, at her home. Ms. Greeley was born Dec. 31, 1956, in Winter Haven to John D. and Erma (Gatlin) Luke. She was a lifetime Polk Co. resident and a homemaker. Joyce enjoyed visiting with friends on Facebook. She was preceded in death by her father. Joyce is survived by her loving family: 3 sons: Robert Narramore of Franklin, TN, Gregory Adamson of Benton Springs, LA, Dustyn Houghton of DuQuoin, IL, mother: Erma 'Jeanette' Luke of Auburndale, 2 brothers: Ricky Luke of Bartow, Dave Luke of Auburndale, 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild. Funeral service will be Wed., Aug. 5, 2015, at 11 AM with visitation beginning at 10 AM at Kersey Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Park.

GREEN, LAWRENCE "L.M." - Madison  
LAWRENCE 'L.M.' GREEN, 89 OLD TOWN, FL. - Lawrence 'L.M.' Green, 89, of Old Town, FL, went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2015, at Haven Hospice in Chiefland, FL. L.M. was born August 30, 1925, in Winter Haven, FL, to Lawrence Moses Green Sr. and Pattie Toole Green. He was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Cross City Church of God in Cross City, FL. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII from 1944 to 1946 and worked in the tractor and farm equipment business in sales and support for more than 25 years. He was the founder, owner and operator of Greens Equipment Co. in Winter Haven, formerly known as Buford Long Equipment Company before retiring in 1987. After retiring, he moved to his farm in Dixie County. He was a great story teller and had a wonderful sense of humor. L.M. was a man of uncommon character and traits. He had a way with people and anyone who spent time with him grew to love him tremendously. He was kind and gentle, a man of great faith, and a man who left an incredible legacy for his family to follow. A man's man in every aspect. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, gardening, raising livestock, hunting and fishing; But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, his church family and Pastors at the Cross City Church of God. L.M. was preceded in death by his parents 'Pop' and Pattie Green; his first wife Opal in 1979; a son Tommy Green; one brother Vernard 'Peanut' Green and a sister Marie Stripling. He is survived by his wife of 23 years Merle (Urquhart) Green, of Old Town, 6 children: Beverly Forbes and her husband Michael, of Lake Alfred, FL, Larry Green and his wife Helen, of Lake Butler, Pamela Green of Winter Haven, Teresa Poston and her husband Phil, of Clarksville, TN, Bill Hinkle and his wife Paula, of Haines City, FL, Tamesia Irwin and her husband Ed, of Winter Haven, a sister Imogene Alberson and her husband Pete, of Edgewater, FL, 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM Saturday August 1, 2015, at the Cross City Church of God with Bro. Carol Lee, Bro. Joe Brooks, and Bro. Ed Ivey officiating. Interment will take place at 5:00PM in Lakeside Cemetery in Winter Haven. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday evening July 31st also at the Cross City Church of God. MARY ELIZABETH HANDY, 77 U.S. Postal Service LAKELAND - Mary Elizabeth Handy joined her Lord on July 28, 2015. She was born August 15, 1937, in Braintree, MA. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Esther McDonald; brother, Glenn McDonald and her ever loving husband, Donald Handy. She is survived by brothers, Gary and Greg McDonald; sisters, Nancy and Cheryl; children, Linda, James (Ronda), Mark (Kim), Deborah (Liz), Nancy (Werner), Holly; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews. All of us will miss her presence in body, but forever cherish her spirit and memory. Arrangements by Gentry-Morrison Cremation Center.
