DR. JOHN O. SUSAC, 71

Dr. Susac treated patients from all over the world and educated other physicians on Susac Syndrome, including most recently, the World Congress of Neurology held in Barcelona, Spain.
John will be remembered by his family as a wonderful father, a brilliant doctor, a caring man, and the family's hero. He never missed a baseball game, dance recital, birthday, or graduation. I am so sorry at the loss of Dr. Susac.
I was fortunate enough to be under his care from 94 until his retirement. He always had a very calming effect on me regardless of my health worries.

One time he mentioned to me that one of his best liked poems was "A peck of Gold" by Robert Frost. He was a true scholar, a real Golden boy and the best man I have ever known. I am grateful to his wife and family for sharing him with us.

Lois and famiy: I had the privilege of growing up with you all. We had a lot of fun in Powhatan. I knew Buster was destined for greatness with all that knowledge he demonstrated. Buster was my first date in high school. I was crazy about him, but you got him......Let me extend my sympathy; he was taken much too soon. May God give you all comfort and peace.

To the Susac family:
I was saddened to learn about the untimely death of John Susac.
I first met John when I was a neurologist
at the Madiagn Army Hospital in Tacoma,
Washington in 1971, Susequent to that I
have met John at many of the American
Academy of Neurology meetings. I heard
him speak about Susac Syndrome at the
American Society of Neuroimaging a couple
of year ago. When I took my Neuroimaging
examination, there was a question on
Susac syndrome which I was able to answer.
Once again my condolences to the entire
Susac family.
He will always be remembered by all
neurologists, especially neuro-ophthalmologists and neuro-imaging experts!

I was a "long-distant" patient of Dr. Susac. He helped diagnosis, write protocol and checked in with me over the last 11 years as I have been struggling with Susac Syndrome. No one in my area understands this illness and he was always there to educate, direct and correspond with me and my treating physicians. He will be greatly missed and my thoughts and prayer go out to his family.

I was diagnosed with Susac's Syndrome in 1990 and Dr. Susac contacted all my doctors here in North Carolina to assure I got the care I needed. He was a brilliant doctor but equally important was his extreme compassion for those he treated and his wonderful sense of humor! His memory will live on through all of us who were blessed by his care. To his family; thanks for sharing him with me and so many others, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Susac treated me for years for a neurological problem. My visits to his office for treatment were like going to visit a friend. His friendly smile and sense of humor made him so nice to talk to. His knowledge and skill was second to none. I will miss him. The world will be a little bit less than it was when Dr. Susac was here. I guess God needed the best Neuro Opthamoligist he could find. My sympathy to his family. Richard Folsom, Lake Placid, FL

Dr. Susac was known to be a brilliant man, but he was also compassionate. His selfless ways and generosity cannot be matched nor can the love he had for his family. I am sad for his loss but more sad for those who never got a chance to meet him. I feel extremely blessed to have known him and his family. Each of them shares some of his attributes and through them his memory will live on.

May the family of Dr. Susac find peace in their fond memories of him and in knowing that he still lives, but under far better circumstances than any of us can even imagine. I considered him a friend, and he was a very frequent patron of our Medical Library at Winter Haven Hospital where I am Librarian. Like the family, I too will miss him but for other reasons. His thirst for knowledge could not be quenched. Oh, the questions he must be asking and the answers he must be searching for now! Just think about his excitement over the resources that must be available for his use! He had such a head start on so many things while he was with us. Let's learn from his lead and follow after.

I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Dr. Susac's family.I regret that I never got the chance to thank him for seeing me in 1991 for footdrop, and not charging me for the visit. I was in nursing school at the time and didn't have insurance.I greatly appreciated it and often thought about his kindness to a total stranger. He will be greatly missed! Suzanne Nation

I'm very HONORED to have known Dr. Susac. For years I watched DR. and Mrs. Susac interact with their family, friends and MANY stray cats, witch never went hungry. The LOVE shared between the Susac's became one of my life's most valued lessons. To this day, I model my grandparenting after their exceptional demonstration.
Dr. Susac will always be remembered as a TRUE GEM. Many prayers for his family.
