Dr. Guillory Thompson was my favorite professor at Dillard.I became her assistant and proctor and loved listening to all the knowledge she imparted to her classes. I met her parents before their passing and they were so proud of her and her brothers. when Dr. Thompson attended a conference in Chicago she stayed at my parents home and we all thoroughly enjoyed her The last time we spoke was when I called to check on her after Katrina. She was a delight, a gifted academic, and will be sorely missed.

Dr. Thompson is remembered as a professional; and, in all of her disparate roles, she applied theory in "praxis" -- from Professor to Chair of the Civil Service Commission. She bridged the gap between "the town and the gown", serving as mentor and adviser to persons of extraordinary responsibility -- from the Mayor of the City of New Orleans to the Chair of the Department of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. Leadership roles were launched within her classroom -- where students analyzed contemporary issues, wrote vociferously, made oral reports and learned the meaning of academic excellence. Students sat in the front of her classroom; for, "no one needed to hold up the wall."
Seldom late for lunch at a faculty dining table, Barbara enjoyed eating. Colleagues who sat at table with her were "in for a treat" -- engaged in discussions of fads and foibles and entertained, humorously.
May God provide peace and comfort to her family and friends in this time of bereavement.
A friend, Winona

To the Guillory Thompson Family,
I am terribly sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Guillory Thompson. She was a beloved and faithful Queen Mother of our Dillard family, a legendary civil rights icon, and a gifted educator. This is an awfully dark day for me and her loss will hurt for a very long time. Although I was a biology major, I took all her courses in sociology. As I said during my acceptance remarks for the 2015 Dillard Alumni Dave Dennis Lifetime Achievement Award, she was indeed my favorite professor. She gave me an extraordinary education that helped me find my calling in civil rights and laid the foundation for any future contributions and achievements. With heavy hearts, Linda and I send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Guillory Thompson family. May the peace of God which transcends all understanding guide your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
