I served under Gen Philips while at Fort Campbell and in Viet Nam. He commanded with a stern hand, but was fair to all. He loved his men. loved his job. He loved his Battalion.
He worked and played hard. A perfect combination for a Airborne Ranger. He served his country well, and deserves to be remembered for it He will be missed by all who served with him

JANICE, I am so saddened at the sudden news of Ran's passing. As a Brother Rat ['54] at VMI, both in Medicine, both in Army, and both extremely happy at being in the service of our patients and our country, we always had a wonderful sense of comrade when together.

My heart goes out to you, your family, and to all of our'54 Brother Rats over your and our loss. My warmest regards.

My thoughts & prayers to the family. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Phillips at the very young age of 6 due to an emergency with my grandmother. I've never forgotten his gentle voice and guidance in that moment. I worked at GRMC ER @ 16 and again had the pleasure of working with him. He will truly be missed in the medical community.

Ran was our commander at Fort Campbell and in Viet Nam. He was very hands on, and always looked out for our best interests, especially under very difficult times during the Tet offensive, Feb. 1968. I had the honor of seeing Ran and Jan the last few years. He had such a commanding presence, and was a very loyal friend, that could always be trusted. Rest well loyal friend…Robert "Zeke" Zarzour…Mobile Alabama
